POLAR EXPEDITION
BEAR ABOUT TO SAIL NORTH STAR DELAYED Preparations for the voyage to Antarctica have been in train throughout this week on the United States Antarctic Service Expedition, flagship Bear. The date of her departure from Dunedin is set down for to-morrow, although there has been a suggestion that the ship may remain in port over the week-end. The principal work on the ship has been the installation, of new parts for the sonic depth-finding apparatus, and the services of a diver have been requisitioned on several occasions for this purpose. The under-water work was completed yesterday: The other expedition ship, the North Star, which was expected to reach Dunedin from Seattle on New Year's Day, is not now expected here before January 7. Her programme includes a stay of 10 days at this port, but this may be reduced owing to her delayed arrival.
Lieutenant-commander R. H. Cruzen, who is in command of the Bear, is again absent from Dunedin. He is on an angling visit to Central Otago waters, from which he is expected back to-night.
