CARS OVERTURN

CAPSIZE DOWN BANK SOLDIER FATALLY INJURED FOUR OTHERS IN HOSPITAL (Per United Press Association) NELSON, Dec. 26. A fatal accident occurred on the Cable Bay road yesterday afternoon, when a car in which the members of a family party were driving went off the road nd capsized down a?bank. Five of the seven occupants were admitted to hospital, where one, a member of the New Zealand Overseas Forces, home on leave, died from injuries last night. The deceased was Private William Burke, aged 30, who suffered contusions to the chest and a fractured right arm, and died from asphyxia, due to congestion of the lungs. The injured persons were:—Robert Kean, aged 62, a service station proprietor, lacerated scalp wounds and concussion—condition serious; Mrs Christina Kean, aged 60, wife of Robert Kean, abrasions to the face and contusions to the right leg--condition satisfactory; Mrs Jocelyn Kean, aged 28, shock and lacerated wound to the jaw —condition satisfactory; Bruce Kean, son of Mrs J. Kean, aged 15 months, concussion and contusions to the head —condition fairly serious. The two other occupants were R. V. Kean and Miss P Calnan, both of whom escaped with minor injuries. The party left Nelson early in the afternoon for a drive. While they were returning about 3.30 the car, driven by Mr Kean, sen., went off the road, which is narrow at the point (about three miles from the Cable Bay Beach) on a corner where the road surface is in a fairly rough condition on account of improvement works. The vehicle rolled over twice before becoming suspended in an upside-down position among the trees. The doors were forced open by the rolling car, and all the occupants were thrown out and down the bank below. Private Burke died in hospital at 11 o'clock in the evening. Before joining the forces he was employed at the Anchor Company's foundry. For the past five years he had resided with Mr Kean, sen. Both his parents are dead, and he has no relatives in • New Zealand. Burke was a well-known Association football player. Last season he was captain of the Athletic senior team, which won the Nelson championship, and he was also a provincial representative. COLLISION WITH GRADER FOUR PERSONS INJURED (Peb United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 26. The four occupants of a motor car were injured when it collided with a road grader and overturned on the Dairy Flats road. The driver, Francis Roy Robertson, aged 26, of Takapuna, suffered fractured ribs. His condition is not serious. His mother, Mrs Rose Robertson, aged 57, received concussion, and her condition is serious. His father, Francis Robertson, aged 59, suffered a fractured pelvis, and is in a serious condition. Mrs Frances Lenore Shields, aged 30, of Northcote, received concussion, and her condition is fairly serious. '""
