QUEENSTOWN

Golf The Ladies’ Golf Championship, 1939. was won by Mrs Gauntiet-Curtis, with Mrs Landrebe as runner-up. The Junior Challenge Cup was won by Mrs Mills, Mrs Herbert being runner-up. During the week a match was played between Queenstown an.d Arrowtown for the Challenge Cup, the former club winning. Results (Queenstown names first); Miss E. Curtis beat Miss Allan 3 and 2, Mrs J. Royds beat Mrs Reid 7 and 6, Mrs Landrebe boat Miss Romans 4 and 3, A. Farrant beat E. Bremner 3 and 2, E. Hartley-Smith lost to R. Romans 2 and 1, P. Dougherty lost to Chilwell 4 and 3, A. Landrebe beat Johnston 4 and 3. Marathon Dance At the social evening held by the local branch of the Labour Party on Friday last the pianist, Mr George Mitchell, played for two hours 17 minutes on end in answer to a request for a “ good long dance to finish off the evening.” The only couple left on the floor at the end of that time were Mr P. Mcßride and Miss I. Buckham. The dancers and musician received a hearty round of applause for their sustained effort. Prize-winners in the euchre games were as follows: Ladies —Mrs G. Barnett 1, Mrs Fodie 2; men— Mr Barbara 1, Mr G. Barnett 2, Miss Alice McSoriley supplied some extras for the dancing. Miniature Rifles A meeting of the committee of the Queenstown Territorial Force Association was held recently to consider the purchase of miniature rifles and the formation of a rifle club. A general discussion took place as to the advisability of forming a separate club when the association was responsible for the whole cost of the rifles. Several members doubted the validity of such action in view of the objects of the association. Lieutenant Stewart reported that Mr W. Edwards had offered to give two cups for competition amongst the members of the Rifle Sub-committee. The Queenstown District High School Committee intimated that’ it did not consider the incorporation of a cadet corps practicable in the present activities ,of the school. Lieutenant Stewart reported that there were still no vacancies for further recruits in the local unit of the Territorial Force. It was decided to appoint Mr C. M. Inglls to the Rifle Sub-association and Messrs Carter and Inglls as conveners of a social committee. Wakatlpn Electric Power Board A meeting which was probably the last meeting of the Wakatipu Electric Power Board was- held on Friday evening, Mr W. James presiding. The Central Otago Power Board wrote advising that under section 39 of the Local Registrations Act. 1939. provision was made for amalgamation of the Wakatipu and Central Otago Power Boards. A copy of the original draft of the Bill related to the change of representation on the Central Otago Electric Power Board. The amalgamation will take effect as from December 1, and It Is necessary that a representative from the Lake County and another from Arrow Borough should be appointed 14 days prior to that date. The following appointments were made: Arrow Borough representative, Mr W. J. James: Lake County. Mr W. P. Saunders. The secretary (Mr J. W. Miller) was requested to pay outstanding debts and elose the account at the Bank of New Zealand. It was resolved to place the board's records in the Lake County office for safe keeping. The acting secretary and the chairman were thanked for their services in their respective positions. Personal Miss Mulholland is on holiday in Dunedin. Mrs G. Hood is visiting Gore, Mr and Mrs J. W. Sinclair have returned to their home at Waikanae after a holiday spent at Closeburn Station. Mr Bissett and Miss Bissett. of Invercargill, are on holiday in Queenstown. Miss U. Butler, of Dunedin, is visiting Queenstown. Mrs H. R. Eastlake is visiting Invercargill. Mrs R. Bell has returned to Invercargill. Mrs H. C. Buckham has returned from a visit to Alexandra. Miss S. C. Thomson, of Invercargill, has been visiting Queenstown. Mr Jennings, of Dunedin, is visiting Queenstown.

Golf Club Dance A successful dance was held on Monday evening to mark the close of the Wakatipu Golf Club’s season. The hall was beautifully decorated with bowls of cherry blossom, lilac and tulips. During the evening a bouquet of tulips and stocks was presented to Mrs H. Tomkics, the wife of the club president, by Mrs J. Royds, on behalf of the lady golfers. Mr Tomkics presented the following trophies to the winners:—Giikison Championship Cup, Mrs H. Gauntlett-Curtis; Major Browne Cup, Miss A. McLachlan; Hislop Cup, Mrs H. Gauntlett-Curtis: Anonymous Cup. Mrs A. Landrebe: Ringer Competition, Mrs J. Royds; Junior Challenge Cup, Mrs R. Mills; Challenge Cup. Queenstown combined team; Lindsay Cup. Mrs R. Mills and Mr E. Hartley-Smith: Championship Cup, Mr A. Farrant; Anonymous Cup, Mr A. Landrebe; Junior Cup, Mr A. Wigley; Ringer Competition, Mr A. Landrebe. Obituary Mr W. H. Smith, a resident of the town and formerly of Arthur Point, passed away at the Frankton Hospital on Monday after a short illness. The deceased was 63 years of age, and was a native of the district. His activities were largely confined to mining in the Shotover. He was well and favourably known in the district. He Is survived by his wife and two sons, a brother (Mr Thomas Smith, of Dunedin), and two sisters.
