“MENACE ON THE ROAD”
A DRUNKEN MOTORIST MAORI SENT TO GAOL (Per United Press Association) HAMILTON, Aug. 12. " I made inquiries where this man lives, and he is stated to be a menace on the road. The people in the district are afraid of him," said Senior Sergeant 0». H. Lambert, when Joseph Maihi, aged 33, a Maori bushman, appeared before Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., at Hamilton today, charged with being drunk in charge of a car. On receipt of the complaint, the senior sergeant said, a constable went to Frankton, where he found the car parked on the railway crossing. There was no one in it at the time, but Maihi later came out of the hotel and eot into the car. He attempted to start it and failed to do this. The constable then went over to the accused, whom he found to be very drunk—almost drunk enough to have been locked up apart from the fact that he was in charge of a car., Stating that the public must be protected, the magistrate sentenced Maihi to 14 days in gaol and cancelled his licence for 12 months.
