RADIO AIR SERVICE
MUSICK MEMORIAL STATION INSTALLATION OF APPARATUS * (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 10. Manned by a small staff of operators, the short-wave apparatus installed at the Musick memorial radio centre at Tamaki is now undergoing tests in readiness for the inauguration of a point-to-point service with Sydney. It is expected that the communication with the Australian station at Rose Bay will be established within a few days and the way will then be paved for an exchange of information between the New Zealand and Australian aviation meteorologists. Although the transmitter will be in charge of . a technician, both the receiving and transmission will be carried out from the building housing the receiver, the two stations being connected by an underground cable. The installation of the direc-tion-finding equipment, which is housed in a separate building, has also been completed, but a lengthy and exacting task is involved in the calibration of the sensitive instruments to ensure accuracy.
The erection of a medium-wave transmitter will be carried out shortly, and when this task is completed facilities will be provided for the operation of a radio telephone service with trans-ocean aircraft. Until the plant is available use can be made of the medium-wave equipment established at Mangere for the internal airways system.
