TALK OF DEBT REPUDIATION GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE SOUGHT AMENDMENT BY MR FORBES (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Aug. 10. An unexpected development in the Budget debate was the introduction in the House of Representatives late this evening of an amendment by Mr G. W. Forbes (Opposition, Hurunul). The. amendment asked for a declaration by the Government against the talk of repudiation. In his speech on the amendment Mr Forbes asked that the Government make it clear to Grea+ Britain that it did not support the implication of debt repudiation in the speech of Mr J. A. Lee (Govt., Grey Lynn) last night. The earlier part of the day was occupied exclusively by back benchers, the speakers being Mr J. M. Allen (Hauraki) and Mr W. P. Endean (Remuera) for the Opposition, and Mr T. H. McCombs (Lyttelton), Mr W. M. Denham (Invercargill). Mr P. Neilson (Dunedin Central), and Mr E. L. Cullen (Hawke’s- Bay), for the Government. The House rose at 10.30 p.m.
