The appointment of Mr H. F. Rutland as registrar of the court of arbitration was announced in the Gazette last night. Mr D. M. Spedding left by the through express yesterday for Wellington to attend a meeting of the council of the New Zealand Rugby Union. According to a Gazette notice issued last night Messrs J. E. Thomas, H. C. Beukc, C. J. Boyes, K. J. Holyoake, S. O’Hara and B. T. Rowling have been appointed members of the Hop Marketing Committee. A motion of sympathy with the Prime Minister (Mr M. J. Savage) in his illness was passed at yesterday’s meeting of the Otago Provincial Council of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union.
Mr K. W. Harte. clerk of the Timaru Court, has been appointed registrar of the Supreme Court and clerk of lbs Magistrate’s Court at Napier. At various periods Mr Harte was clerk of the court at Masterton, Balclutha, Dunedin, and Christchurch.
Mr George Gibson, chief accountant of the New Zealand Farmers’ Cooperative Association of Canterbury, Ltd., has been appointed secretary of the association as from November 1. Messrs D. C. Cameron (president). J. H, F. Hamel (deputy president), and A. Thomas, manager of the Dunedin Savings Bank, will leave to-morrow morning to attend the annual conference of savings banks at New Plymouth.
Dr Roscoe Pound, an eminent American iurist and former dean of the faculiv of law at Harvard University, who has been touring New Zealand, left Wellington on Wednesday night by the Awatea for Sydney. He was accompanied by Mrs Pound. A Press Association message from Wellington states that the election of Mr S. W. Caspar as the representative of the second division on the Government Railways Superannuation Board is announced in the Gazette. The vacancy was caused by the resignation of Mr E. J. Dash. The Union liner Kereru. which was unable to reach Dunedin on Wednesday. left the emergency ground at Waianakarua. where she had remained overnight, and arrived at the Taieri airport at 9.35 .yesterday morning. At 10.4 a.m. the machine left for the north to resume the normal schedule, carrying mail, freight, and the following passengers:—Mr A. McCloy for Christchurch, Messrs I, M. George and J. W. Thompson for Wellington, and Mr T. Jackson for Palmerston North. Passengers by the south-bound liner in the afternoon were Mr J. W. McConnor and Mr E. F. Blee from Wellington, Miss J. Olliver from Blenheim, and Dr W, H. Bremner from Christchurch,
