HOSIERY MANUFACTURERS

"ASTOUNDED" AT MR NASH INDUSTRY NOT SATISFIED (From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON, July 13. British hosiery manufacturers are "astounded to learn that Mr Walter Nash. New Zealand Finance Minister, has. according to reports from the Dominion, stated that the hosiery industry of this country appears satisfied at the conversations he has had with its representatives." The National Federation ot Hosiery Manufacturers' Association denies that the industry is satisfied with the position which has arisen through the quota and other steps the New Zealand Government has taken. Mr Frank Stockall. secretary of the federation, said that a delegation from the federation met Mr Nash in London last month when it was pointed out to him that New Zealand with a population of 1,600,000. was too small a market to carry an industry such as hosiery as the number of small production units necessary to make the variety of goods the nublic required would be almost impractical. The undesirable effects the New Zealand restrictions would have on trade unionists in this country who are purchasers of New Zealand's primary products was stressed.

" We expressed in no mixed terms to Mr Nash the very grave dissatisfaction felt in the hosiery trade by the total prohibition of British hosiery, except ing gloves and children's socks, in the second six months of this year, a period we have now entered upon."
