BRITISH TINPLATE
ADMISSION TO AUSTRALIA MOVE FOR EXCLUSION POSSIBLE RETALIATION (United Press Association) (By Electric Tel raph—Copyright) MELBOURNE, July 12. The chairman of the Tariff Board (Mr Hugh McConaghy), at the hearing of the application for protection for the tinplate industry, said it was regrettable that those who had prepared the British case had used such strong language when referring to the possibility of resentment in Britain if British tinplate was excluded from the Australian market. The remarks about possible retaliation by Britain had given a lead to people who should not be expected to have the same depth of thought as the leaders of their industry. He added that no industry seemed more natural for development on economic lines in Australia than the tinplate industry.
A message received yesterday stated: During the hearing of an application before the Tariff Board, in which the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd. is seeking protection for the tinplate industry it proposes to establish, two representatives of British tinplate manufacturers tendered a joint statement protesting and declaring that if British manufacturers were excluded from the Australian market every effort wou.d be put forward by the British industry to cause the withdrawal of preferential treatment enjoyed by some Australian exports, especially canned goods.
