UNSKILLED WORKERS
EMPLOYMENT-SEEKING AUSTRALIANS MINISTER ISSUES WARNING (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 11. '“My attention has been drawn to the large number o- unskilled and semi-skilled workmen who are coming to the Dominion from Australia on the chance of securing employment on their arrival,” said the Minister of Labour (Mr P. C. Webb) to-day, “ and I feel that a public word of warning would not be out of place, “ While it is true," the Minister said, “that there is a definite shortage of certain classes of skilled tradesmen, there is no apparent shortage of unskilled workers in New Zealand, particularly at the present time, when the position is accentuated by the availability of workers employed in seasonal occupations during the summer months. Unskilled or semiskilled Australians should make very careful inquiries from the New Zealand Trade Commissioner in Australia before undertaking the journey.”
