SPORTS BODIES' CAMPAIGN
ARRANGEMENTS FOR ' CARNIVALS ;■■•■»
Under the auspices of the Hundred Thousand Club, the combined sports bodies held a successful meeting yesterday afternoon to further their campaign to raise funds for the sports bodies in Otago. „*,„', ' f The Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox) presided, and also present were Miss H. Hislop, sports secretary, Y.W.C.A.; Miss A. Foley, Otago Women's Hockey Association; Messrs W. A. Jenkins and C. J. Leeden, Swimming Association; Dr John Fulton, Lawn Tennis Association; J. D. Cameron, Yacht and Motor Boat Association; J. M. Rogerson, Surf Life-saving Association and Dunedin Whippet Racing Club; J. J. Wrestling Association; H. D. Morgan and J. M. Briggs, Otago State x Primary Schools' Sports Association; H. Woodhead, Football Association; F. H. Greenfield, Cycling Association; and W. McQueen, St. Kilda Beach Improvement Society. „ „ ■,, The "organiser (Mr C. Campbell Dawkins) explained that it had been decided to hold a big queen carnival early next year, and various business organisations would be, asked to assist the sports bodies to raise the £IO,OOO required for their activities. In the meantime a preliminary campaigner funds was being undertaken, and in connection with this campaign it had been decided to hold a national fitness pageant, and also to conduct a £SO alluvial gold art union. . .; Mr J. c. L. White was unanimously elected honorary treasurer for the camDetails in connection with the na?tional fitness pageant were discussed, and it was decided that the pageant take place some time in February next year. 42 Advice was received from Mr C. B. Wing, commissioner, Dunedin Boy Scouts' Association, that the Scouts would stage a display similar to -the one given on the occasion of the last visit of the World Chief Scout (Lord Baden-Powell). ..'' %■■■ It was decided to hold a beach carnival at Christmas time, further arj rangements to be made at the next meeting. * Arrangements were made for the disposal of the art union tickets, the Cycling, Swimming and Lawn Tennis Associations undertaking to be responsible for 100 books each. Other sports bodies are asked to take a similar qU At 'the meeting to be held next Thursday in the Council Chambers, at 5.15 p.m., arrangements will be made for the beach carnival and national fitness' pageant, and for the further distribution of art union books. v
