Opening of the New Manse An event of very great interest and importance to members and adherents of the Presbyterian Church in the Strath-Taieri and surrounding districts took place in the church at Middlemarch on Friday afternoon and evening, when, after a vacancy of five years, the Rev. G. S. King, of St. James's, Wanganui, was inducted as minister of the Strath-Taieri parish. The moderator, Mr Chisholm, conducted the services, and the Rev. R. W. Murray (Waipiata) and the Rev. K. T. F. Larsen (Lauder) represented the Presbytery of Central Otago. The Rev. R. W. Murray read from Deuteronomy and Hebrews, after which the moderator gave a short review of the work of the church during the long vacancy. The moderator read a prayer of dedication and the address to the minister and congregation was given by Mr Larson. Following the induction, a welcoming social was given in the Sunday school hall to the Rev. Mr King and Mrs and Miss King. The moderator presided, and extended a most cordial welcome to the guests as members of the Central Otago Presbytery. Several short addresses were given by representatives of the various branches and departments of the church. Mr J. Dawson, on behalf ol members and adherents, presented the moderator with a cheque in recognition of his services as moderator during part of the vacancy. The new manse which has recently been erected near to the church was officially opened on Friday afternoon. The visiting ministers were present, and Mrs Peter M'Fadyen, an old member of the church, was called upon to turn the key and declare the manse open, after which the key was handed to Mr King, the new minister. An adjournment was then made to the Sunday school hall, where refreshments were provided by members of the Ladies' Sewing Guild and Mr and Mrs and Miss King were welcomed by all present. TEMUKA A Dangerous Landmark It is understood that the corner at Winchester known as " Langford's Corner," on which stand a large twostoreyed retail establishment, will not now be removed, as negotiations between the Highways Board and the owners have broken down owing to a disagreement 'over the value of the property. This particular spot, which is on the main Dunedin-Christchurch highway, has always been regarded as a menace to motorists and the decision to allow the building to remain will no doubt not be looked upon 'in a favourable light by travelling motorists. A number of serious accidents has occurred in that locality during the past few years. Proposed Retailers' Association At a well-attended meeting of Temuka business men on Monday evening, called with the object of forming a Retailers' Association, the following resolution was carried:—" That this meeting protests against the five-day week as proposed in the new award to come into operation, and that the five day and a-half week should prevail." The discussion lasted till a late hour and the Government was freely criticised, especially in relation to the hardship that would be suffered bv small traders who have to pay high wages to their employees. Watson, on the eve of his departure to take up the position of postmaster at Outram, was met on Thursday night by his fellow-em-ployees in the Balclutha Post Office and presented with an afternoon teaset in token of their goodwill. Mr Dawson (postmaster), in making the presentation, spoke very highly of the recipient, and congratulated him on his promotion. Mr Watson suitably replied.

Office Change Mr H. H. Lyall, the well-known company secretary and accountant, of Balclutha, has this week removed to commodious premises in central Clyde street, which he has purchased and had altered and fitted up with the very last word in office accommodation. A feature of the new premises is a large central office, equipped with Broadwav heater, that could be used if required for the purposes of a board meeting room. At the rear of this is a large strongroom rapidly nearing completion. The front office is nicely fitted up, and there is a public passageway, ensuing privacy for the proprietor's private office, which in itself is a commodious apartment, the passage ending at the public counter. All the latest labour-saving devices, including a modern calculating machine, are tobe seen in this modern office, which is wonderfully well-equipped for the prompt despatch of business.—23637. The match, which was notable for the excellent tackling of the winning side, was easily the best played in Fanfurly so far this season. From the kick off Ranfurly attacked strongly, and after 15 minutes of play Hanrahan, the half-back, neatly worked the blind side and scored a good try in the corner. From then on till the interval the home side held the advantage, and were unlucky in not adding to their score. After the spell Middlemarch opened brightly, but were unable to keep up the attack. In the closing stages Ranfurly took command, and, as a result of fast following up, M'Cleavey" snapped up the rolling ball and dived over Shortly after, again as a result of fast following up. J. C. Kearney beat the opposing backs to touch down and give Ranfurly a lead •of nine points.
