DAVIS CUP MATCH

AUSTRALIA v. AMERICA THE LATTER SUCCESSFUL EASY WIN IN DOUBLES (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) FOREST HILLS, May 30. In the Doubles, in the Davis Cup match between Australia and America, Mako and Budge beat Crawford and M'Grath 7—5, 6—l, B—6. Budge’s service gave the Australians a quick lead, which they gradually improved to 3—l. The service was then held until M'Grath dropped his sixth and the score was even. Play was crisp and speedy, both teams engaging in short, sharp, volleying contests in the middle of the court. Crawford then dropped his service, double-faulting and netting, giving the Americans a 5—3 lead. Crawford then steadied, and with M'Grath’s brilliant angling the Australians broke Budge’s service, then evened the score 5—5, but the Americans won the next game for a 6—5 lead. The Americans wera twice set point before they clinched the vital twelfth. The Americans quickly assumed a runaway lead of 3—o in the next set, crashing their way through their opponents with dashing net play. Crawford won his service in the fourth and for a moment it appeared that the Australians had halted their opponents, but the Americans swept the remainder of the games with ease. In the third set the games at the beginning alternated with the service. M'Grath’s delivery endangered the seventh when Crawford’s volleys lacked length, but the Australians recouped it in the longest deuced game thus far. A break came in the ninth when Crawford lost the service and the Americans assumed a 5—4 lead. A gallery of 5000 cheered lustily when the Australians retrieved to lead 6—5. They were twice set-point at this vital juncture, but the Americans’ perfect lobbing enabled them to regain the lead to win the set. Mako, unlike last year, proved the most formidable obstacle and was aggressive in attack. Mr Sproule told the Associated Press; “ I understand that Mako and Budge have expressed their willingness to visit Australia at the end of the year. I am cabling the association suggesting an invitation.”
