DUNEDIN BEATS ZINGARI
EVEN BUT UNINTERESTING GAME
A potted goal and a good try gave Dunedin a victory over ZingariRichmond by 7 points to 4 points in the game at the University Oval, the game being far from interesting. The wet state of the ground militated against anything in the nature of effective passing movements, for, although both sets of backs went into action on various occasions, wild passes and poor handling, occasioned by the slippery foothold and the greasy ball, almost completely nullified the movements. The learns were as follows: Dunedin.—Backs—Egan, Wallace, Toomey, T. Treacy, Spillane, Manion, Wilkins; forwards—Jolly, P. Treacy, baulks, Berry; Collett, Brosnan, Aitken, Roy. Zingari - Richmond. Backs Campbell, Idour, Gibb, Lumsden, Rapspn, Anderson, M'Lean; forwards—Murdoch, Pollock, Hennessey, Short, Douglas, Lysaght, White, Lawry. From the opening;, exchanges it .was apparent that-.the'.teams were evenly matched, for, ■ although the Zingari-Richmond forwards exhibited slightly more dash and combination than their opponents, Dunedin's tackling was particularly deadly, and for a considerable period neither side succeeded in securing any real advantage. Many mistakes were made on each side, and the game was continually being held up on account of infringements, but neither side was able to make anything of any apparent advantage afforded thereby, and the first spell ended without any score being recorded. Several attempts were made by the two sets of backs to institute passing movements, but the wet ball made handling difficult, and fast footwork was impossible in the mud. ' . ' .
When the second spell had been in progress for a short time Campbell was given an opening almost immediately in front of Dunedin's posts and potted a good goal Play remained in neutral territory for a period, and then Zingari made a determined rush into Dunedin's twenty-five, where Egan was able to place his side on even terms with a well-judged pot. The remaining period of the game was played for the most part in midfield, the deciding movement being commenced by Berry at half way and going through a large number of players to be finished by Jolly, who scored wide out. The kick failed. The game ended shortly afterwards with the scores: — Dunedin .. ..7 points Zingari .. .. 4 points Mr A. Shanks was the referee.
