KAIKORAI STILL UNBEATEN

UNION DEFEATED A win against Union by 12 points to 3 on the Caledonian Ground maintained Kaikorai's unbeaten record. It was a hard match, played under difficult conditions, the ground being very heavy and greasy. Except for occasional breaks by the Kaikorai backs, there was little clean handling, both sides indulging in too much aimless kicking, particularly in the first half. When they did get moving, the Kaikorai backs combined' well. The forwards were evenly matched, the fast,' spoiling tactics of the Union pack giving the side more than a fair share of the territorial, honours of;„the_second half;'" : 'r■'::;•'.'.'-v" ••'•-■:•>: " : ~:y:< The teams were as follows: Kaikorai. Backs Millar, N. Kean, Manning, R. Kean, Murray, Bolton, Scott; forwards—Murphy, Leatham, Jamieson,'Barnes, BartleU, Mcintosh, Gibson, Oliver." . .:' : . Union.—Backs—R. Werner, Silver, L. Werner, Anderson, Stephens, Goding, Homer; forwards—Reid, Paris, J. Walker, Vorrath, Newall, Walker, Martin, Gensik. Kaikorai made a lot of ground from the kick-off, and in the early stages of the game Murray and then R. Kean tested the Union defence with strong runs. Bad fielding by R. Werner let the Kaikorai threequarters right in after a quarter of an hour's play, Manning picking up smartly and giving R. Kean a clear run over at the corner. Barness kick at goal missed. Kaikorai 3, Union nil. A good run by Stephens gave Union an advantage, but Kaikorai came again, and Gibson drop-kicked a goal from a mark on the twentyfive line. Misunderstanding among the Union backs gave Kaikorai a fine chance just before half-time.. Manning caught R. Werner under the posts, and from the consequent ruck Murray went over smartly. Barnes missed with the kick, making the half-time score Kaikorai 9 points, Union nil. . Union began the second half on attack and when Homer sent Anderson away on the blind side, Stephens came round outside him and battled over wide out. Silver • failed with the kick. Kaikorai 9, Union 3. This was followed by the brightest spot of the match so far. The Kaikorai backs moved off from half-way, and N. Kean had enough pace to swerve round Silver and race away for a good try behind the posts. The kick was forfeited. Kaikorai 12 points, Union 3. The Kaikorai backs were playing attractive football at this stage, handling snappily and running strongly. Silver's kicking drove them out repeatedly, and for about 20 minutes Union kept up the attack in Kaikorai's twenty-five. The Maroons lacked finish, however, and Kaikorai took charge again towards the end of the game. The final scores were: Kaikorai .. .. 12 points Union .. .. 3 points Mr J. Briggs was the referee.
