NOTES,ON THE RACING

(Special to Daily Times) WELLINGTON, May 30.

The feature of the Foxton meeting yesterday was the form of the horses in the Hawera stable of J. Fryer in five starts. They won three times in succession in the first three races, and later in the day ran a second and a third. One Whetu's return to the winning list was overdue, and now that he has struck form a.gain he should get .another stake shortly. The only horse in the Cup to give him any trouble was Royal Banquet. This gelding ran really well, and if it is intended to put him to the jumping game again he will be worth following. A feature of the day was the form of Red Manfred. He won the hurdle race decisively, though he was assisted by the inside panel of the last fence being down and his pace on the flat asserted itself. However, he had the race won a long time before that, and as he represents much better class than the average hurdler, he should go a long way at the game. Later in the day he came out and ran second in the seven furlongs to Reipar, and it was a very meritorious effort, for he gave the winner, who led all the way, a substantial start out of the barrier. Reipar reached top class amongst hacks late in the autumn, but he then had to be eased up. His winning display yesterday was excellent, and if he goes on the right way he will soon win 'again. Sir Nigel was a rather unexpected favourite in this race, but he was well beaten after havinj? every chance.

An unlucky runner in the hurdles was Red Sun, who was going well about five furlongs from home and beginning to make up ground rapidly when he almost fell over King Thomond. who had come down on the flat. Red Sun's jockey was thrown right out on his mount's ears, but, making a fine recovery, he finished sixth. As he carried 12.6. it was a meritorious effort.
