NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE

(Special to Daily Times) AUCKLAND, May 29. The most interesting work at Ellerslic to-day was performed by the steeplechasers, eight of whom were associated in a bout over the country. Those to take part were Forest Glow (M'Govern), All Irish (Fergus), Royal Limond (Bealc). Black Marl in (Baker). Tea Chat (Turvey). Top Star (Craddock), Cynical Kid (Conway), and Sky Pilot (Smith), who commenced al (he sod wall and went round over the hill, finishing at the top stone wall, the last of the fences on the fiat. All Irish was responsible for most ol the pace, but he was headed after coming down to the fences on the flat by Forest Glow, who gave a clean and even display of jumping. All Irish went well for a horse in his class, and Royal Limond made a fine showing, jumping splendidly and running on strongly at the finish.- Black Marlin (Baker) hit the first fence of the double hard the first time, but afterwards gave his usual polished dis play being under a good hold throughout. Sky Pilot was allowed to take hi- time, and did not jump as cleanly as usual. The others were not impressive. Tea Chat and Top Star finishing very tired. Hot Dance (H. Jones) accompanied these horses- over the fences on the flat both times, and gave a good display, except for hitting the second fence of the double very hard. The hurdlers had the use of hurdles on the outside of the course proper, and the best exhibition was given by Jolly Beggar (Beale). win* jumped

four flights boldly, although he displayed a tendency to run in at his fences. Jolly Beggar afterwards did useful work on the sand.

Gay Broney (Fergus) set out to accompany Jolly Beggar, but fell at the first fence. He was remounted, and jumped the remaining three fences carefully. Speedfast (Thompson) and United (Turvey) jumped four hurdles on the course proper without mistake, the former giving one of his best displays to date. Free Air (Kearns) and Backblock (Thompson) were sent over the same fences. Free Air fenced cleanly and gave a better display than Backblock, who hit a couple of hurdles fairly hard. The No. 1 grass, with the poles out 10 feet, was available for galloping, and the going was very heavy. A fog hung over the course early and made timing difficult, although it cleared before the majority of the horses came out after the breakfast interval. Versant (M'Tavish)- was responsible for a sound effort over six furlongs in lmin 20 l-ssec. It was a good gallop and Versant is making steady improvement in condition. There are indications that he may soon make a return to form.

Tooley Street was too good for Prince Colossus over a round in 2min 2sec, the last six furlongs in lmin 27sec Tooley Street carried a fair weight and finished pleasingly. Horowhenua finished clear ot Royal Appellant at the end of a round in 2minM l-ssec. the last six furlongs in lmin 23 4-ssec Horowhenua is in better form than he has been for some time past, and went well, even allowing that he carried a very lightweight. Royal Appellant is not a good track horse unless urged, and was very sluggish. Waitaka easily defeated High Star over six furlongs in lmin 22 3-ssec, High Star taking lmin 25 l-ssec. Waitaka is on the improve, and goes well in heavy going: Kiltowyn (Goldfinch) reeled oft the best half-mile in 51 3-ssec after having a good move-up and little reserve at the finish. He retains his pace and his condition is steadily improving. Kelly (Gilchrist) recorded the best six furlongs in lmin 19 3-ssec, the last half mile in 53sec. Although he was lightly weighted, Kelly went well in spite of the fact that he was tiring at the end Armacourt did a working gallop over a round in 2min 5 3-ssec, the last halfmile in 53 3-ssec. She is in her element when the ground is heavy, and has gone on the right way since racing at Te Rapa. Knight of Australia (Dulieu) went smoothly over a round in 2min 4 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 56 4-ssec. Collision, after jumping two hurdles well, did useful work with Black Thread, running the last three furlongs in 41 4-ssec. Collision is improving and should take high rank as a hurdler before the winter is over. He revels in heavy going. Greek Gold finished clear of Surella at the conclusion of five furlongs in lmin 9 2-ssec. Surella held a slight advantage over the first two furlongs in 26 l-ssec, but Greek Gold was going well and would have run much better time if the former had kept with him in the straight Greek Gold has benefited by recent racing Far Land and Peter Beckford were associated in a smart half-mile in 52 3-ssec. Peter Beckford had a good deal the worse of the weights, and was wide out. his effort being pleasing. Far Land also went well for a horse in his class and looks a good hack.

Master Musk easily defeated Don Erma over a round in 2min 3 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 56sec. Master Musk was not raced at fe Rapa owing to giving himself a slight rick, but he is all right again and doing well, although he would probably be all the better for a race. Don Erma is in very solid condition. Pahu and Monastic encompassed a round in 2min 5 2-ssec. the last halfmile in 58sec. Pango also covered a round in 2min 5 2-ssec, but was a trifle faster over the last half-mile in 57sec. Valmint was slightly in front of Lord Val and Te Hai at the conclusion of a round in 2min lsec, the last halfmile in 55 4-ssec, Valmint worked in improved style, and Lord Val went well v/ith the weight he was carrying. Te Hai covered a lot of ground on the outside and also went soundly. Boomerang (Dulieu) defeated Gilladar (Cammick) over six furlongs in lmin 25sec, the last three in 43 3-ssec. Boomerang looks well after his racing at Te Rapa, but will require to improve upon the form he showed there to score at Ellerslie. Killadar is full of muscle. Silver Sound gained an advantage at the jump-off, but Shy (Murray) came up on the inside in the straight to take his measure at the end of six furlongs in lmin 23 2-ssec. The last three were run in 41 2-ssec. and Shy worked solidly.
