CLARENCE RIVER BRIDGE
SOUTH ISLAND RAILWAY ROUTE CHRISTCHURCH TENDER ACCEPTED (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 2. The Public Works Department has accepted the tender of Mr Alan Moore, of Christchurch, for the construction of the cylinder foundations and concrete piers for the bridge to be erected over the Clarence River for the South Island main trunk railway. The bridge will consist of 12 spans, each of 120 feet, and it is estimated that it will take two years and a-half to construct. It will be downstream from the existing traffic bridge. The contract does not include the steel girders. In practically all the cylinder bridges that have been built in the past, it has been the practice to have two circular cylinders to each pier. In the Clarence River bridge there will be only one oval-shaped cylinder in each pier, the object of this design being to facilitate excavation for the cylinders through the heavy boulder formation in the river bed.
