SEVERE TREMORS
ITALIAN DISTRICTS SHAKEN SEVERAL PEOPLE KILLED 1 > (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) ROME, Oct. 18. Sixteen people were killed and many injured in an earthquake in the neighbourhood of Udine. Fifteen of the dead were trapped while sleeping in houses which collapsed at Canevadesacile. There was another victim at Conegliano where an ancient castle was shaken down. Fifteen were injured in Venice, where old houses fell. ' WILD SCENES IN VENICE LONDON, Oct. 19. (Received Oct. 19, at 10.15 p.m.) The Daily Mail’s - Rome correspondent says the earthquake occurred at 4.11 a.m. It was particularly severe throughout the Venetian province and Venice rocked for 12 seconds. There were wild scenes of panic and the inhabitants, half clad, fled from their homes. Many were terror stricken and plunged into the canals. St. Mark’s Cathedral, the Doges,Palace, and other show places are believed to be undamaged. The shocks extended throughout northern Italy, and many historic buildings were damaged. TWENTY-THREE DEAD ROME, Oct. 18. (Received Oct. 19, at 10.15 p.m.) The earthquake toll is 23 dead. A second shock, lasting four seconds, rocked Belluna and Udine provinces at 10.15 p.m. No casualties have been reported.
