EAST END DISTURBANCES

STEPS TO PRESERVE ORDER CITIZENS’ COMMITTEE SET UP P (British Official. Wireless) RUGBY, Oct. 18. The Home Secretary has intimated his willingness to receive a deputation from the East End of London regarding public order and the alleged provocative behaviour of Fascist bodies. In the meantime, on the initiative of the warden of Toynbee Hall, an East End Citizens’ Committee has been set up, and the presidency has been accepted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, with the object of uniting the churches and social organisations of the district in a united effort to preserve order through insistence on the principles of selfcontrol and tolerance, which are the essential basis of democracy. In this way the promoters of the movement hope to prevent deterioration of the situation before it becomes serious.
