(Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 6. In view of the Auckland spring meeting on Saturday and Monday, there was a good deal of. fast work at Ellerslie this morning, when the semifinal gallops took place. The course proper, with poles 40 feet out, was in most de'mand, the going being in good order. The No. 3 grass, sand,, tan, hurdles, and steeplechase courses were also open The beat efforts of the morning weie those of Red Manfred, Flood. Tide. Kellv, and Karl on the course proper. Roman Mascot did a round in 2min 20sec. She ran the last' seven furlongs in lmin 41 3-ssec, going comfortably. Speedfast did a seven-furlong peg in lmin 40 2-ssec, and Wee Pat finished up her work with six furlongs in lmin 30sec. . ;• -'■ ■: •_;.' Kilonsoa impressed more than High Star in six furlongs in lmin 23sec, the first three in 39 3-ssec. • ■ Flood Tide and Knight of Australia, with Mai De Mer to assist them over the last six furlongs, ran a mile and a-quarter in 2min 18sec, the last six in lmin 24 4-ssec. After getting the worst of the start, Salva finished several lengths in front of Backblock, doing five furlongs in lmin 7 3-ssec—a good effort for K*lly, after completing the first three furlongs in 38 3-ssec, got to the end of Six in lmin 18 3-ssec—the best of the morning over the distance. Jewelled Girdle was a shade in front of Valspear over six furlongs in lmin 21sec the last half-mile in 53 l-ssec. The only gallop over a mile was that of Manawhenua and Royal Appellant, in lmin 45 3-ssec, the last six in lmin 20sec. They were together at the finish. Royal Appellant, on the outside, again worked nicely after breakfast. „ - j Red Manfred covered a mile and aquarter in 2min 16 4-ssec, the last seven furlongs in lmin 33sec and the final three in 41 2-ssec—a first-class effort-and finishing on well. Bon Star ran half a mile in 52 3-ssec. doing it nicely. _ • ~ The Great Northern Guineas candidates, Golden Blonde and Mandamus, covered five furlongs in lmin 6 i-Ssec, the first two in 25 3-ssec. Golden Blonde finished a couple of lengths in front, but Mandamus could have been pi j-jcgr Vera Acre and a Ronnedale gelding in the same stable covered six furlongs in lmin 22sec, going-well. Francis Drake and Aiwai. came home from the half-mile post in 52 3-ssec. Francis Drake, a free galloper, was up useful work by running the last three furlongs m Karl was sent over six furlongs, and after taking 38 l-ssec for the first three came home in lmin 19 3-ssec. Fleetwind ran half a mile in 53sec on the No. 3 grass. Mariorv Daw did six furlongs in lmin 23 4-ssec. the last three in Lord Val, after schooling, did six furlongs in lmin 23sec. Valmint was going comfortably while traversing half a mile in 54 4-ssec, with an increased speed over the last three, which took 40sec. Kaola gave a satisfactory display over four hurdles in the centre, and was afterwards sent over the steeplechase fences on the fiat, and gave a good exhibition. „ Volition cleared six hurdles, jumpin ft well. Lord Val, Arabesque, All Irish, and Mountain Bruce, in that order, went over four hurdles. They had a lot of pace on, and Lord Val made an excellent showing. Arabesque also went Electric Flash, Zane Grey, King Rod. and Vilma were associated in a round over the steeplechase course. Electric Flash was in front throughout, and they.all got round safely. Sunee was scratched for all engagements at the Auckland meeting at 9 a.m. to-day. Recent arrivals include Fersen and Cardsharper, in charge of H. Gray, Kaola (S. Cleaver), Entail and Spiral (W. Rayner).
