ALLEGED CALCUTTA SWEEP

(Per United Press Association) TE AROHA, February 23. Late last night, on the eve of the Te Aroha Jockey Club's race meeting, about 300 sportsmen assembled in the Masonic Hall in connection with the drawing of 21 horses engaged in the Champion Hack Cup Handicap to-day. The proceedings were alleged to have been in Calcutta sweep style, and had just commenced (the first horse submitted realising £25) when five members of the detective force and Constables Monson and Hinton made their appearance in the room, closed the doors, took charge of the money on the table (about £114), and then took the names of the whole of the participants present, including a number of visiting sportsmen, with a view to future proceedings. The gathering had been arranged by a few local residents, but it was not under the auspices of the Jockey Club. The unexpected raid caused much excitement locally.
