Good dividends were a feature of a very successful opening of the Te Aroha Jockey Club's meeting to-day. Conditions for racing were excellent, the weather being brilliantly fine and the course in first class order after rain over night. ~•-':* Mungatoon registered a surprise win in the Hemes' Memorial Cup, and Gay ; Blonde scored brilliantly in the Waihou Handicap in spite of the fact that she wag havmgher first race since she v. as injured at Paeroa in the spring. Val Watch was the win favourite for the Ruakaka Hurdles, and she realised expectations by scoring brilliantly.. Val Watch made a one-horse race of it and had 'six lengths to spare at the finish. Record Flight attempted to go with her along the back, but had no chance. However, he beat the others just as easily as she defeated him.

Tybalt was responsible for a surprise in winning the Waitoa Handicap, paying double figures on the \vin machine. Astarth and Tybalt made most of the running and were the leaders in the straight from Rona Bay, Our Bonnie, Swift Spear, Tin Lap, and Ford Acre. Tybalt stayed on solidly to win by half a length from Astarth, with Tin Lap half a head away. Tybalt has freshened up and may win again soon. Astarth and Tin Lap ran solid races, and High Tea should do better, as he lost his position early and then went well on the outside.

There was another double-figure dividend on the' win machine when Velocipede nearrowly won the Juvenile Handicap. Application and Lady Ruler made the running, and they were still the leaders at the distance, where Teak had drawn up on the outside, and Du Barry was disappointed when attempting to go through. Du Barry got a run on the rails a little further on and was in front with 50 yards to go. However, VelociEede finished in most resolute fashion to eat her by a neck. Triune also came home strongly for third, and Teak was fourth, ahead of Application, Persian Lady, and Lady Ruler, all of whom tired near the end.

Another good win dividend was returned when Mungatoon scored at almost double figures in the Hemes Memorial Cup. Sinking Fund, Knight of Australia, and Kelly were quickly prominent. Sinking Fund and Kelly making most of the running. Sinking Fund was in front entering the straight from Kelly, Caliente, Prince Colossus, Knight of Australia, and Mungatoon. Kelly was beaten at ; the distance, where Mungatoon had drawn up on the outside, and Fersen was also coming on the outside. Mungatoon finished best to win by half a length from Sinking Fund, who defeated Prince Colossus by three parts of a length. Fersen was almost in line fourth, followed by Knight of Australia and Aiguille. Gipsy Moth was an each way favourite for the Shaftesbury Hack Handicap, and duly scored. Miss Lorraine and Queen Nona made the early running, but Wahine Rehi went up fast on the outside at the top to lead into the straight from Queen Nona, Miss Lorraine, King Brierly, and Gipsy Moth, who was on the outside. Gipsy Moth drew up to the leaders at the distance, where Miss Lorraine was stopped when attempting to go through. Gipsy Moth looked like winning very easily inside the distance, and after his rider had allowed him to ease he had to be kicked out to withstand a challenge from Mies Lorraine. Tray Bit, last away, came home well for third, and Wahine Rehi, who was not well handled, waa fourth Broughton was nearly caught napping on the winner.

The each-way favourite. Gay Blonde, was responsible for a brilliant performance in winning the Waihou Handicap. She was awkwardly placed behind Scotland, Gay Lap, British Columbia, and Greek Gold at the distance, and, after a slight check, veered to the outside. It then appeared doubtful whether she would get up. but she rolled into her task in brilliant fashion to score by half a length from Greek Gold, who beat Scotland by a neck. Lucidns was right up fourth, followed by British Columbia . and Star Artist, who was staying on, afc .the end

after being in the rear early. # _ The improving Sir Abb scored decisively in the Champion Hack Cup. Kurapae made all the running, and led into the straight from King Musk. Gay Rose, Sir Abb Pango, Barn Dance, and Dark Marble. Sir Abb was clear inside the distance, and won with a little in hand by three parts of a length from Dark Marble. On Parade finished strongly to get third, a length and a-half aw;ay, and Nun Nicer was fourth. The next to finish were Gay Rose, Grand Talk, and King Key. The outsider of the field, Whakapara, scored narrowly in the Hot Springs Handicap. Trishna jumped out clear, and led to the turn, where he was joined by Whakapara and King Mestor, with Matorni handy. Whakapara was in command at the distance, and stayed on to win by a head from Matorni, with Gay Broncy another head away third. Trishna was fourth, and Prolyxo fifth. Whakapara's win was overdue, but he was hard mit to it to stall off Matorni and Gay Broncy, both of whom finished on strongly. PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY (Special to Daily Times.) TE AROHA, February 24.
