MILTON The Bruce Woollen Mills will be closed to-morrow evening for annual stocktaking and boiler inspection, and will reopen on Monday morning, September 24. The passes gained in the recent examinations of pupils of the first aid and home nursing classes of the local St. John Ambulance Association are announced as follows: —First aid class (second year, advanced aid) —Messrs H. Fagh and A. Thornton; first year —Mrs W. H. Wells, Mieses L. Robinson, B. Fagg. J. Hood, Messrs H. Robinson,, W. H. Wells, and S. Gray; home nursing—Mesdames A. Hall, R. Hay, Misses J. Morris, J. Mirams. .... , . ■ 1 A great improvement has been effected. in the lighting of Milton’s main street by the installation of four 600-watt lamps and 15 250-watt lamps,. to replace the former lighting with 20 100-watt lamps. By arrangement .between--the Borough Council - and the_ Otago Electric Power Board. The ’ experiment is being tried for a period of about six weeks of continuing the whole of the street lighting throughout the night, switching off at '5.15 a.m. instead; of at 11.30 p.m. as formerly. A report presented to the Borough Council at its meeting' by the waterworks " engineer l (Mr W. H. Stevens) stated that good progress was being made with the gravitation water supply scheme from' -Glen Stream, north Branch. The wprks track was completed, and the roadway formed to the intake. Several plips. had occurred on the new roadway during last month’s wet weather, but these had been cleared away. A start had been made on the excavations for the masonry work for the weir at the intake. Over a mile of.' pipe trench had been excavated in readiness for laying the pipes, the ' first consignment of which had arrived from Wanganui.

Mr D. M'Grigor, of Mi.lbum, has received from the Department of Agricul-, ture a report on the wheat-growing variety trial conducted on portion of his farm property last season, under the, supervision of Mr J. E. Davies, instructor in agriculture (Dunedin), and Mr R. B. Tennent, fields, superintendent. The. summary of yields was; as follows, on the average of 10, weighings:— S.S. Tus-. can: Seeding in pounds per acre, 122.5; yield, 47.8 bushels;., . S.S, Velvet: Seeding, 122.51 b per acre; yield, 48,2 bushels (or .4 more , than S.S. Tuscan). Marquis;' Seeding, 1241 b per acre; - yield,. 44.4 ~ bushels (or 3.4 less than S.S. Tuscan. Jumbuck; Seeding, 122.51 b to the acre; yield, 38.7 bushels or 9.1 less than S.S., Tuscan). The manure was at the rate of lewt per acre pf superphosphate, and seed was treated with powdered copper carbonate (dry dusting); 10 applications to each treatment. The Jumbuck variety, being .the first to ripen, was badly attacked by birds, the loss being estimated at 20 per cent. As the sowing time is again approaching, Mr Davies, strongly reconv mends treatment of the seed with dry pickling. The dry pickling of wheat (copper carbonate treatment) used by Mr Davies is 2oz of copper carbonate dust, to one bushel of wheat, a slightly bleached (not blue) appearance being all that is required in well-pickled wheat. BALCLUTHA On Wednesday afternoon the installation of Bro. William Campbell as W.M. of Lodge Clutha. Masonic, for the current , year, was carried out in the Masonic Hall by R.W. Provincial G.M. G. R. Hender--son, assisted by Grand Lodge officers. The event was celebrated at night by a, banquet in the theatre, followed by - a ball. Both functions were by

The following representative primary school’s football team has been selected to play a Dunedin primary representative team at Balclutha to-morrow: —Good (Kaitangata), Morgan (KaitangataV, Sweeney (Balclutha), Craig ;_(Greenfield), Ramsay (Kaitangata), Currie (Milton), Haig (Kaitangata), Cooper, Stevenson, Washington (Balclutha), Weir (Stirling), G. Wood (Milton), Marshall (Otanomomo)’, L. Young (Greenfield), Storef (Kaitangata). Catches of whitebait in the Molyneux so far have been small, but with this week’s fine weather should improve. Dr S. T. Martin, whose resignation as house surgeon at Balclutha Hospital has been accepted, intends sailing as ship’s surgeon on the Port Hobart, leaving Wellington on September 25'for London, via Cape Horn ond Dakar. He desires to gain further experience overseas. The combined social of the Clutha branch' of the Farmers’ Union and the Women’s Division was held in St. Mark’s Hall last night, when there was an attendance of 120. Mr Allen Christie and Mrs J. C. Anderson were in of the evening, the first half of which was occupied by competitions. The ladies’ first prize fell to Mrs Thomas Bishop (Hillend), while the “booby” prize went to Miss J. Willocks. Mr Elliott (of Milburn) won the men’s prize and Mr M'Crorie (Stirling) the “booby” prize. Songs were sung by Mesdames J. G. Anderson, William Anderson, Miss Cathie Newson, and Mr D. Kaye. A dramatic sketch entitled “Going to the Women’s Division” was presented by Mrs J. P. Boyd and Mrs R. Anderson (Stirling). Congratulatory remarks by the chairman and Mrs Anderson were suitably replied to by representatives of the different districts. ■ i
