OTAGO EARLY SETTLERS
MONTHLY MEETING OF COMMITTEE
The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago Early Settlers’ Association was held yesterday afternoon. There were present:— Messrs J. J. Mallard (president, in the chair), W. H. Fcrens, F. W. Knight, James Brown, R. S. J. A. Macdonald, J. Hope, D. J. Calder, W. J. Strong, H. Baron and J. W. Patton. Apologies were received from Messrs Crosby Morris, J. A. Paterson, W. Nicolson, E. Webster, A. Eccles, James Wallace, and George Thomson. The president reported that all arrangements in connection with the anniversary reunion to be held on March 23 md March 24 were being finalised. The following gifts were received and votes of thanks were passed to the donors: —From John Norrie, Lawrence — “ Poems and Songs on Home and Abroad,” by Mrs E. Colville; T. Goodman, ' Caversham —framed portrait of John W. Lowe, Treutham (late Dunedin), Palmyra, 1858; the Rev. John Pringle, Roslyn—photo group of old identities of Patearoa (Messrs Henry Schcrp, William Chirnsidc, William Pearson. George Simpson, William Richardson and George Taylor) : Miss Melville, Dunedin —two interesting photographs; John MTndoe, Dunedin—framed photograph <•£ his late grandfather, John MTndoe, Dunedin, Alpine, 1859; Mrs J. Wilson, Littlebourne —framed portrait of her late mother, Mrs D. Carey, Magnet, 184(1, and her daughter, Mrs Julia Ann Taylor (the first white child born in Otago, April 24, 1841) ; Miss F. Byar, Mornington, Dunedin —bound copy of thesis, “ A Contribution to the History of New Zealand, John Turnbull Thomson, Early Surveyor,” New Zealand’s first Surveyorgeneral ; Mrs W. Spence, Dunedin photograph group of Crimean War veterans, also photograph of early Dunedin; Mrs B. Dalziel, Dunedin (member of Genealogical Society of Utah, TJ.S.A.) —records of burials in the Southern Cemetery, . Dunedin, compiled by herself: Mrs F. Valpy, Green Island, framed photographs of her late parents, Mr and Mrs J. Forsyth, Dunedin; Mr Forsyth (Pladda, 1860), Mrs Forsyth (Victory, 1863); also photograph of a ferntree cottage, Dundas street, Dunedin, taken in 1867 (the home of Mr and Mrs J. Forsyth). Mrs J. Evans, Ngapara, piece of wood on which is carved the name “ Surat,” this having been taken from a cabin door of the Surat, which was wrecked at • Gatlins on December 31, 1873. * The following deaths were recorded during the month: —Mrs Margaret Wilson, Gore (late Knapdale,-88), William Davie, 1868; Mrs M. Agnew, Mornington (84), Omeo, 1863; Mrs Agnes MTnnes, Port Chalmers (82), early 1860’s; Donald Macdonald, Clinton (72), s.s. Aldinga, 1863; A. A. Binnie, Waitati (77), Ben Lomond, 1863; John Thomas Dale, Port Chalmers (73), arrived 1865; Miss Elizabeth Somerville, Rangitea (91), Blundell, 1848; J. M. Powell, Westport (93). arrived 1865; R. W. Baxter, North-East Valley; arrived early 1860’s, The following members of the O.E.S.A. were enrolled as life-members: —Mr J. J. Mallard (president), s.s. Gothenburg, 1864; Mr E. C.
