AN AVIARY ROBBED

SECOND RAID IN SIX WEEKS

VALUABLE BIRDS STOLEN.

(Pes United Pbess Association.) WELLrNGfTON, March 3.

' The attractive aviary of Mr B. Sutherland at Karpri, one of the finest aviaries in New Zealand, was visited by thieves about six weeks ago, but the matter was kept quiet in the hope of catching them. Last night, however, owing to illness of a neighbour,-the watchdog was placed in confinement to prevent him making Aisturbing noises, and the opportunity was availed of by the thieves for another visit. Entry was made in» two places by cutting the netting. It is estimated that 16 birds were stolen in one pen and 20 in another, and, worse still, owing to neglect to fasten the edges of the netting together in one case many birds escaped. The birds taken were budgerigars, 10 pairs valued at £5 10s per pair in Sydney. The birds that escaped were, finches, but how many cannot be said.' A serious aspect of the raid is that the birds were breeding, which means a loss of eggs and. also young birds.
