BOOKMAKING CHARGES
' raids in' taranaki
NUMBER OF; ARRESTS EFFECTED.

A well-organised raid on alleged book-, •makera was carried out throughout Taranaki on Saturday afternoon .under the supervision of Inspector S.Eawle, of New Plymouth. , ' At Hawera William Elder, the alleged occupier of the Arcadia tearooms, in Uhibn street, was arrested after a raid on the premises on a charge of bookmaking. At Waitara Ernest Alexander Johnson was arrested oh a similar charge, and at New Plymouth, Oscar Eoyce Uiander, Ernest Robert Byers, Sidney Roy Lovell, and Frank Joseph Farrell were at various premises and later, along with Johnson, charged with bookmaking before a justice of the peace...'. Each was remanded, on bail at £IOO to appear in New' Plymouth on Wednesday. Elder will •be charged at Hawe'ra. .' s '■;■'
A large force of police participated in the raids, which were carried out with military precision at 2.40 p.m. , The accused Lovell was also charged with keeping a gaming house.
