In a talk to members of the Timaru Rotary Club recently, Rotarian C. H. Tripp* who recently visited Stewart Island and the Sounds in H.M.S. Laburnum, mentioned that at Dusky Sound there was still evidence of the early visit of Captain Cook to those parts. Although the weather would not permit the Laburnum to enter Dusky Sound Mr Tripp said that he understood that a tree—mentioned in the account of Captain Cook's voyages—which had been used as a gangway from the ship to the shore— -. was still there, as were also the, stumps of trees which had been felled by the navigator's party to allow of the taking of observations. It was also stated in the account of the voyages that'tha_ship's forge had been taken ashore. He believed that the marks of the fires on the stones were still visible to-day^
