AMATEUR ATHLETICS

EVENING SPORTS MEETING . The first of a series of evening sports meetings under the direction of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held last night ' on the Caledonian Ground. There iyas a good attendance, and the spectators witnessed some excellent performances. Interest was added to'the meeting by the presence of about nine members of the crew of HALS. Diomede, all of whom competed in the Three Mile event. Chief Petty Officer M. Atton ran a fine race, being in a prominent position throughout the distance to secure third place in a field of 16. The 880 Yards Race was one of the best races seen on the Caledonian Ground for some time, there being no fewer than 19 competitors. Keen_ interest was shown in the ladies’ section, and some very promising young runners were seen in action. The conditions were favourable, the only drawback being a fresh, easterly wind, which the competitors in the sprint events had to face. The meeting was well controlled by officials of the centre, and all the events were run to schedule. Following are the results: — THREE MILES. E. L. Reith (Leith ■ Club), 90yds .. 1 : I.
