THE QUEEN CARNIVAL

TO THE EDITOR. Sir —Having read the letters by “ Port Chalmers ” and “ Anti-Gamble,” I endorse the former’s remarks. I have purchased tickets in various art unions, held by local .organisations, including the Dunedin Queen Carnival, and on each occasion was informed that results would be published or fqrwarded to ticket holders, but in many instances they were not. I venture to remark that “ Port Chalmers ’ is more concerned in the non-appearance of the results, than in the loss of his “smiling” pound. _ Regarding the insinuation by “ Anti-Gamble ” that “an example like this brings out forcibly the evil attached to art unions, etc.,” I beg to submit that an art union is an excellent and straightforward method of raising money for various affairs, mostly of a charitable nature. Moreover, as we are not all in a position to give a straightout donation, I would advice “AntiGamble” not to blow his horn so _ loudly about his seemingly benevolent spirit.—l am. etc., Oamaru. November 1. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — (1) The committee of the “ Cinema ” Queen advised each winner by post; (2) all ticket-holders had equal chances; (3) a list of results is in every picture theatre in Dunedin; (4) the strenuous and financially successful effort deserves the most generous praise. The workers sincerely trust that the unemployed unable to pay for subsidised goods will be treated generously as that was the object for which we worked. The owner of the Singer car is a child of six, an orphan.—l am, etc.. R. S. Black.
