Me uici not lose any friends for the Trotting Cup. JhTb* -Auckland-owned pacer Worthy Light won the Borough Handicap at Wellington in a manner (says Argus ) that indicated he will go on to win several races this season. This is his third success under F. J. Smith, and the fpur-year-old son of Worthy Bond and Illumination has the makings of a real raceA full report of the Trotting Cup Trial Handicap says that Eo/al Silk slipped his field two furlongs and a-half from home and, pacing the last two furlongs in 31 1-Csec, won in convincing style from Moun-
tain Dell, Kewpie’s Guy, and Red Shadow, who were hard driven all down the straight. Royal Silk gave a similar performance in October of last year at Oamaru, where he strolled home in a tenfurlong race from Harold Logan, his brilliant effort inspiring many to regard him as difficult to beat in the New Zealand Trotting Cup, for which he started favourite and finished down the course. He is not trained by L. F. Berkett, and was coupled in the totalisators with Red Shadow. When the field was set in motion Brent Zolock made a break. Mountain Dell led out with Kewpie’s Guy, Logan’s Pride, Royal Silk, AVrackler, Red Shadow, and Glenrossie racing in that order. The first two furlongs were negotiated in 36sec. Racing through the straight Mountain Dell and Kewpie’s Guy were together, with Logan’s Pride and Royal Silk together just behind them, and Red Shadow and Wrackler well placed. Approaching the six furlongs mark, which was reached in Imin 44sec, Royal Silk and Red Shadow improved their position. Going to the far bend Royal Silk dashed to the front and was three lengths clear of Mountain Dell and Kewpie’s Guy as he passed the mile post in 2min 15 3-ssec. Finishing strongly, Royal Silk never looked like being beaten. Mountain Dell responded to a bard drive, as did Kewpie’s Guy. Red Shadow also finished well. The Royal Silk-Red Shadow bracket was favourite with £360 15s and £273 10s. Mountain Dell was next choice with £236 and £l9B 15s.
