By Sentinel. # Eminent is being mentioned in connec- ■ tion with the New Zealand Cup. The Smuggler was taken north yesterday to-fulfil big engagement in the New Zealand Cup. lied Sun is reported to be training on well, and will have the services of K. »■' Voitre in the Mitchelson Cup. Manetho is engaged in the Spring Plate ■' at Riccarton, and should be worthy of note during the meeting. Worship has brightened up again, and will probably appear at Riccarton. ? Gallant Fox is bearing an improved ■ appearance and worked well yesterday morning when travelling twice round the ;'plough. 1 A field without a favourite seems to be the present position in connection with the New Zealand Cup. There was no fluke about the threecentury Silbella’s win at Akaroa, as she won going away from the opposition at i the finish. ■ • A number of horses were worked at Wingatui yesterday morning, but; were kept from steady to three-quarter 1 pace *> business. i- The good field in the Linwood Hack Handicap may make it harder to win than .-the New Zealand Cup. Wingatui has one acceptor in the Welcome Stakes in Queen of Song, who is now’ bearing an improved appearance. Rebel Star, who won the Trial Stakes at the Banks Peninsula meeting, is a four-year-cld gelding by Robespierre from Sweet Beauty, a half-sister to Poladora. Coronilla sprinted three furlongs at Trentham on Saturday in 36 2-ssec, and is reported to be in excellent shape for the Welcome Stakes, Bold Brigand was amongst the horses worked at Wingatui yesterday morning. i So far he has kept sound, but such a big :i topped horse vVants the best of legs. Southdown’s trainer »was ‘ not anxious .»• to start him in the New Zealand Cup '.-owing to the difficulty of getting a good rider at the weights. . There is appar- , t ently hope that one will be located. If some of those remaining in the New s Zealand Cup are entitled to start then it ■■ must have been a certainty for Polydora as she . could’play with them. '• . Irish Lancer continues to get through fairly solid W'ork as he is firming up in • an appearance which can only be gained by being busy on the track. The Oamaru Jockey Club is again committing the mistake of publishing the han- ' dicaps for their summer meeting before the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting. This means that three days’ racing will take place after the issue of the handicaps. Berate seems to be going well in her work. She -won the Stonyhurst Handicap last year with 8.5 in Imin 38 4-ssec. She is engaged in the .Randolph Handicap and other races at the New Zealand Cup meeting. * . . Drumfire did not leave the post in ms
race at Motiikarara as he refused to jump away, at the rise of the barrier. A Dun- ■> edin man was negotiating for him and ■ perhaps that is why he failed to make a deal. ■"•■■■ , ' Polydora would have started a good -favourite for the New Zealand Cup. Now ; she is the- unpalatable Polydora. Still she may be saddled up for the Metropolia ton or some other race at the meeting. Palantua, Blazon, and Kapuna left yesterday by motor van for the north to run at the New Zealand Cup meeting. It is understood that Palantua, with the assistance of Blazon over a mile, galloped a mile and a-half at Wingatui on Sunday. Silver Jest shaped promisingly at Motukarara He was one of the last to leave the barrier and after meeting trouble m - the- race finished second to Rebel Star, - Silver Jest'is a 'three-year-old gelding by - Silverndo—Comiqne by Liniond—Farce. by San Bran or Absurd from Cowl, the dam of'Rational, Mask, and The Masquerader. One. of the most interesting features
• about 'the New Zealand Cup meeting is the fact that some horses are raced that apparently have only a remote chance of " winning. Yet they-win at times and show that form on paper and form in fact are sometimes two totally different things. The Dunedin Jockey Club’s summer programme has been drawn up and shows an increase of 285sovs over last year with the principal stake of 250sovs and no Crace worth less than lOOsovs. There will be a hurdle race on each day’s card. -.' The acceptances for the New Zealand Cup meeting make a fairly good, card, but' the principal event will be contested by one 'of the weakest fields that has ' ever, been saddled up for the race. It inay; nevertheless be a good race although 'there are no stars in the-field. Minerval, ■ y. ho ran second last year, is the only ' proved stayer in the field. The others have to be taken on trust. Golden Wings will start a good favourite for the ; Stewards’ Handicap, but the rest of the card looks fairly open. ' Inflation is a surprise figure in the field : for the New Zealand Cup. There is no doubt of his brilliance up to a mile and he might win on speed in a slow run race. He was got by Paper Maney from Fleeting by Boniform —SnowsteeP by Clan-l-anald—Safeguard, by Maxim—Toredo by Apremont—Nautilus by Traducer —Water Witch by Camden —Mermaid. The Mer’maid taproot has produced feome good stayers, including Aborigine, Darebin, 1 Grand Rapids, Le Loup, Lieutenant Bill, .Lurline, Matator, and Cynisca. The most interesting feature of Inflation’s breeding is the fact that he is inbred to the Sunshine taproot which produced Positano, the sire of four Melbourne Cup’winners, and the dams of two more. Limond, the sire of Limerick and Co.,_ Martian, _ and Boniform. Paper Money is a St. Simon line horse with Sunshine supplied by the sire line of his dam and hence bred on somewhat similar lines to Positano and Limond. There is a good deal of stamina in the dam’s side of Inflation’s pedigree, and if he fails to stay it will not he on the score of breeding. Paper Money sired Overdrawn, who ran third in the New Zealand Cup, and he was by Paper Money on to the Mermaid taproot. On Saturday at Trentham Epigram jumped away from the mile and a* quarter marl: and was picked up by Bettws-v-Coed at the mile. He went with hia mate till about a furlong from home, when he drew right away to finish three lengths ahead, and was still_ 4P ln £ ceedingly well. After-going the first ■quarter in 25 4-ssec, the Jialf in 51 3-ssec. the first six furlongs in limn 17«ec, and the first seven in Train SOsec. Epigram completed the. full journey in fmin 9sec. The last mile took him Imm 43 l-ssec, and the last half 52sec. It was a most attractive trial, and the colt is •now a definite starter in the Cup, in which he will be. ridden by W, E. Pine.
