ALEXANDRA NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.) ALEXANDRA, October 31. Growth is very pronounced everywher* at present. At Galloway on some farm* the first crop of lucerne has been harvested. This is some weeks earlier thanusual. . , . LAWN TENNIS. The first games of the first round' of the Vincent Lawn- Tennis Sub-associa-tion’s fixtures took place on Saturday on the local courts. Clyde defeated Alexandra by a narrow margin of five games. MINING. Unemployed miners are still engaged throughout the : district, and their numbers are inclined to swell rather than decrease. A greater increase from now on seems assured on account of the unemployment caused through the failure of the fruit crop. At Fruitlands soma very promising returns have been obtained, and one miner obtained 23dwts in about a week. The river is very high, and is preventing any mining- on the banks. ■ • - V . BOWLING AND CROQUET:; ' The official opening of the Alexandra Bowling and Croquet Club took place on Saturday afternoon. Mr W; B. Willsteed president of the Bowling Club, welcomed the visitors, players, and intending players. He then called on Mrs Willsteed to roll.the first bowl. The croquet greens were opened immediatelv after, when the president (Mr* J. A. O’Kane)- -welcomed visitors and new members. She called on Mr Henry Schaumann, a veteran bowler, to midka the first hoop. ■■ . ' «•. PERSONAL. . Mrs W. A. Bodkin is at present on a visit’ to Wellington representing the local Plunket Society at the annual conference. Mr G. L. Stevenson, of the Wellington Railway staff and formerly of Alexandra, is at present visiting Alexandra.
