CRICKET

CHRISTIAN BROTHERS’ CLUB ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Christian Brothers’ Old Boys’ Cricket Club was held in the Hibernian Social and Debating Club’s room, Manse street, last night. There was a good attendance of members, and the chair was occupied by the president (Mr A. J. Dowling). Moving the adoption of the annual report, the chairman said that no championships had come to the club last season, but there was an opportunity of improving that respect this year. Mr M'Phee, as coach, had rendered splendid service, and had expressed his willingness to be asspciated with the club in the forthcoming year. He asked members to play their part next season and forward the interests of the club as much as possible. Mr H. O’Reilly seconded the motion. He said it appeared the seniors had to be “up against it ” before they showed at their best, and their record would no doubt have been better than it was if they had not lost the services of Mr Cusack. After starting in a low grade the club had risen to the Senior Grade, with four teams, and it was now for members to give whole-hearted support to _ the club and make it strong and flourishing. In a short discussion it was urged that members should attend practice matches in greater numbers. The report was adopted. It was decided to convey votes of sympathy to members who had lost relatives by death during the year—Messrs T. Rodgerson, R. Cusack, W. Brookes, and E. MTiroy. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Bishop Whyte; president, Mr H. O’Reilly; vice-presidents—Father’s Collins and Tylee, Bros. O’Sullivan and McCarthy, Mrs A. Blaney, Messrs A. Heffernan, A. J. Dowling, R. Marshall, G. Donnelly, M. H. Dawson, J. Cartwright, L. F. M’Cormack, A. G, Neill, W. Fox, and J. Richardson; hon. secretary, Mr V. J. Browne; hon. treasurer, Mr J. Thompson; club captain, Mr F. Dawson; General Committee —Messrs M. Hayes, W. Brookes, C. Lynch, T. Tracey, J. Laffey, J. O’Reilly, N. Rodden; deputy cliib captain, Mr V. M'Carten; Coaching Committee—Messrs F. J. Toomey, J. Blair, C. Lynch; delegates to Otago Cricket. Association —Messrs A. J. Dowling, W. Brookes, C. Lynch; hon. auditor, Mr Y. Cahill. Mr M’Phee (coach) gave a short address, in which he tendered advice to members on cricket generally, and referred to the good spirit that existed in the club.

Mr O'Reilly, on taking the chair as president, thanked members for the honour conferred on him.

Reference was made to the excellent work of Mr Dowling in the interests of the club and of cricket during his term of president. Thirteen new members were elected.

Mr Dowling expressed the view that it would be in the interests of cricket if the executive were elected by direct nomination. As it was at present, the tendency was for one club to practically control everything.—Another member said that all senior clubs should be represented on the Otago Cricket Association. —The matter was left in the hands of the delegates to deal with if it comes up at the annual meeting. It was decided to approach the City Council with a request to improve the Oval for cricket playing. It was agreed to open the season on October 7.

The Wanganui Cricket Association at the annual meeting to-night decided to enter for the Hawke Cup, a competition promoted among the minor associations of the Dominion.
