SPECULATION AROUSED

MR MACDONALD’S CONFERENCES BRITISH PRESS COMMENT (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, September 19. (Received Sept. 19, at 10.30 p.m.) There is considerable speculation about Mr Ramsay MacDonald’s conferences. .The Morning Post says: “ It is believed in well-informed quarters that the imminence of developments in the United States was discussed, both with British economists and League officials. It is realised that should the United States enlbark on an inflationary programme disturbance would be caused in the markets of the world, which would possibly demand drastic action. Mr MacDonald might then, as president of the World Economic Conference, deem it advisable to put some part of the conference machinery into operation in an effort to cope with the situation.” The Financial Times says: “If the dollar maintains a degree of etability at or around the present level sterling must also be maintained near the present figure. It is not inconceivable that gold countries may have to 1 consider a change of policy. Should a run on the Dutch guilder develop then the position of the franc may be threatened.”
