ANNUAL MEETING HELD CHRONIC WINS THE STEEPLES. (Per United Press Association.) GISBORNE, August 5. In wintry weather, with a bitterly cold wind and occasional showers, the annual meeting of the Poverty Bay Hunt Club was held on Park Racecourse, to-day. ine going was very good for the winter season, despite recent heavy rams. The totalisator put through £2904 10s, compared with £3799 10s last year, a decrease oi £895 10s. Three furlongs from home Aiguille drew level with the leader, but in the straight Peter Paul again came away and won easily by two lengths. In the final dash Valsier came up*fast, but was threequarters of a length behind Aiguille when the judge’s box was passed, with Bothwell one length and a-half back fourth, lime, 2min 14sec. Chronic was the early leader from Jim Quin, Lezetta, and Ironic, with New Ferry well back. In the second time round Jim Quin temporarily took charge, followed by New Ferry, with Chronic lying third. In the back stretch Ironic came through and Chronic moved up. These two were heading the field and had opened up a big gap when Ironic hit a fence and came down, leaving Chronic with a lead of about a furlong from Jane, with New Ferry almost a similar distance back. Chronic stryck the last hurdle, but H. Dulieu made a good recovery and Chronic won by 40 lengths from Jane, with New Ferry 20 lengths back third, and Jim Quin fourth 18 lengths back. Lezetta, who was running fifth, struck the last hurdle and came down. Time, smin 30 4-ssec. SWARTHYOOR TRIAL HANDICAP. AUSTRALIAN RACEHORSE ENGAGEMENTS FOR WINOOKA. (Per United Press Association.) SAN FRANCISCO. August i. (Received August 0, at 7 p.m.) AV. A. Macdonald, part owner of the Australian racehorse Winooka, announced on Friday that the horse would be leaving here for Chicago on Monday. Air Alacdonald denied reports that Winooka would be taken to Seattle, and said that the sprinter would go immediately to the Hawthorne track at Chicago for a series of match races, reaching a climax, it hopes were materialised, in a test against the great Equipoise.

(Received August 6, at 8 p.m.) At the Victoria Amateur Turf Club's meeting on Saturday the following were the principal results: AUSTRALIAN HURDLE HANDICAP. P. G. Hay’s ch g POIDALE (Poitrel —Muskdale), syrs, 9.7 (Hynes) .. 1 Executors of Estate of J. Payne’s SUB ROSA, 9,4 (Nelson) 2 E. J. Watt’s LADY DORIS, 9.3 (Calluin) 3

The other starters were; Phoeis, Zygon, Pitoota, Hyde Park, and Sarocto. The early running was made by Phoeis, with Poidale his nearest attendant, and then Zygon and Lady Doris. The race was all over when half the journey had been covered, Poidale having established a long lead, eventually winning by 12 lengths, with a length between second and third. Then followed Hyde Park six lengths away, Phoeis, Pitoota, and Sarocto, while Zygon fell. Time, 6min 7sec.

The public made a hostile demonstration against the winner, whose owner, Mr P. Hay, was so upset over the affair that he made a statement to the press declaring that he had not a« penny on the horse, and the hostility was quite unjustified, particularly in view of the fact that Poidale mot with a slight accident last Tuesday and was not expected to do himself justice.

Won by a head, with half a length between second and third, Time, Imm 54Isec. In the Moondah Plate the New Zealand horse Good Hunting finished third, while Peter Jackson and Ruling Light were unplaced.

TRAINING AT RICCARTON THE FINAL GALLOPS. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 5. Rain fell at Christchurch during the night, but the weather was fine at Riccarton this morning for the final gallops, though a cold wind made the conditions unpleasant. The inside of the trial grass track was slow after rain earlier in the week. The morning proved very interesting on account of a lot of schooling, a large number of steeplechasers going over the country course proper. Chrysology and Waterpower ran six furlongs in Imin 20sec. Elude covered a mile in Imin 48 l-sscc, Sam Smith accompanying him in the last half mile. Top Rank did half a mile in 54sec. Martian Chief covered six furlongs in Imin 23 2-ssec.

Grecian Prince and Southdown ran five furlongs in Imin 5 2-ssec. Normandy and Epigram, together, did six furlongs in Imin 19 3-ssec, Bell Hill and Cleaner taking Imin 24 l-ssec. Haere Tonu and Water Polo ran half a mile in 53sec. Meprisant ran six furlongs in Imin 20 2-ssec. Cricket' Bat covered a mile in Imin 47sec. Pharaoh and High Speed did six furlongs in Imin 22sec. Helen Gold and Quebec ran half a mile smartly in 51 l-ssec. Dorian and Charmeuse covered six furlongs in Imin 22 3-ssec. Croupier beat Korero over half a mile in 53sec. Bay Tree and Cyclonic ran five furlongs, doing the last half mile in 52sec. Nightly covered six furlongs in Imin 20sec, Fiat Lux joining in the last half mile. Spoon ran six furlongs in Imin 20 l-ssec. Errantry and Sweet Agues did half a mile in 54sec.

Silver Ring and Cylinder ran seven furlongs, the former being n neck in front in Imin 34sec. Shatter and St. Joan covered seven furlongs in Imin 36sec, and Bright Red and Moab Queen half a mile in 53sec. Fleeting Glance and Some Shambles ran five furlongs in Imin 7 2-ssec. Thurina and Gay Jim ran a mile in Imin 53see. Prince of Orange, a mile in Imin 51 l-ssec, High Pitch a mile in Imin 53 2-ssec, and Jeremy seven furlongs in Imin 41sec. Polydora and Mount Boa, together, well clear of Cottesmore, ran seven furlongs in Imin 33sec. Polydora went well. Ranelagh and HmTingham ran six furlongs in Imin 22 3-ssec, the latter stopping badly. Jaloux, with a mate, van a mile in Imin 49 I-ssec. Advance Camp jumped four hurdles well. Callamart, Omeo. Make Up, Copey, and Luna Lux were schooled once round the steeplechase country. The three firstr.amed were several lengths in front all the way, but the five horses all jumped well. Altogether it was a capital piece of work. , „ , , Gold Knight and Rational II gave a pood exhibition of jumping over four hurdles. Kapuna jumped two rounds of the schooling fences in the middle tan. It was a capital display. Adventus, Henry of Navarre, and Landmark were schooled once round the hurdles. Adventus hit the first, but that was the only mistake in a good display. Rasonli followed the other three, jumping four hurdles well. Membo jumped four hurdles smartly. Semper Paratus, accompanied him, but his jumping was a trifle slow. Lucess, Kaokaoroa. Tunbridge, and Dan Russell started together for a school over the country epurse proper, Jen following a hundred yards behind. Dan Russell lost his rider at the first kennels double, but the others gave a good display. Lucess being just in front all the way. Polling Day jumped four hurdles well. Don Jose jumped four hurdles, giving a good display. Nine of Spades gave a moderate display over the fences on the course proper.
