RED SHADOW’S BRILLIANT FINISH. (From Our Special Reporter.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 5. The Metropolitan Trotting Clubs mesting was opened in wintry weather oligut rain fell during the morning, and the hrst two or three races were decided on somewhat'greasy going, which improved considerably during the afternoon The attendance was on the small side at opening of the card, but improved considerably during the afternoon After the principal events the handling of Red Shadow was questioned and the explanation accepted. Red Shadow was well back in the early stages, but , put in a brilliant but belated effort at the finisa. All on the card went out for the Introductory Handicap. Lough Guy was in strong demand and backed down to a short price. Worthy Queen and Cannonball were also supported. Stanley Bingen got to the front after going a couple of furlongs, and at the end of a lap was in charge from Lough Guy, Cannonball, Great Burton and Worthy Queen. After the final half-mile Stanley Bingen was closely attended by Longa Guy, and when the former broke 50 yards from the post, Lough Guy dame on and won by two lengths. Great Burton was four lengths away, a neck in front oi New Metford, who was well clear of.threat of the field. Katute New Metford, and Belle Lorrimer broke early in the race. , Tangatu waa backed as an apparent certain!ty for the Advance Handicap. Esplendor, Tangatu, and Good Companion mixed at the start. Key feooc soon took charge and led over the first circuit from Olive Key, Esplendor, and Tangatu, who were racing in close order. Tangatu moved into second place tour furlongs from home, but could not reach Rev Spec, who beat him by two lengths Good Companion was a bad third ai»cl Cloudy Raugc next. . . Arethusa and Belinda were struck out of the August Handicap, and Colorado was the popular pick in a good betting race. They went away well except Mountain Dell, who lost a little. Linkman at I once went to the front, and at the end ! of half a mile was leading Gold lmge. Sunny Morn, Silver de Oro and Colorado. This was the order over the next circuit, and the field was packed in close order coming along to begin the last lap. Mountain Dell had taken charge after leaving 1 the straight, but Sir Guy headed her a little, over three furlongs from home, and led round the top from Mountain Dell, Gold Tinge, Sunny Morn, and Colorado. Lindbergh and Re'd Shadow were improving their positions. Sir Guy turned tor home about three lengths clear, and appeared to be scoring an easy win wnen Red Shadow came with a brilliant run and got within a neck of the winner as they paced past the post. Sunny Morn was three lengths away, with Colorado close up, and then came Glcnrossie and Mountain Dell. Gold Tinge broke up when with the leaders half a furlong from home. Red Shadow put in a grea, run over the final three furlongs and better placed in the early stages, must i have, been much more troublesome. Mill, i Si r Guy was winning with a good aeal to spare when Red Shadow came <m the scene; Lindbergh appeared to interference when making a run at the suart of the final half-mile. Aleron and Worthy King dropped out of the Trial Handicap. Reporter and Blue Mountain carried most of the money, but backers shot wide of the mark, as ; Gay Gordon gathered the stakes, and I paid a very big dividend. Suncross. broke up at the start, and Blue Mountain put in a bad break in the middle mile. Pageant d’Or made the early running, but Blue Mountain and Reporter headed him, and led Denver City, Wild Guy,. Gay Gordon, Purser, and Pronto Bingen, Purser was in charge* a furlong from home, but Gay Gordon beat him by half a length in the run home. Pronto Bingen was the same distance away, followed by Blue Mountain, Denver City, Vy ar Paint, and Wild Guy. First Wrack, Nicoya, and Garner at- ! tractcd most support of those engaged in : the Stewards’ Handicap. New Metford and Worthy Queen broke at the start. Gcmlight at once became prominent, and was showing the way to Ukelele Lady, Great Burton. First Wrack, and Standby at the end of half a mile. After going the middle lap Gcmlight, Ukelele Lady, and Ckeafc Burton were racing in line from First Wrack and Stand By. Cleat Burton was in charge going down the back, but once in the straight Gemligbfc i came again, and won by a length. Huon I Voyage came with a good run at the i finish, and got up to beat Nicoya by a neck for third place, hirst Wrack and Ukelele Lady were next. Garner broke, after going six furlongs. The winner paid a very big dividend. , , Bracken was the only absentee in the Queen Mary Handicap. A vermis and Somerby made the early running from Craganour and Master Roy, and they were in charge from John Jinks and Jolly Wave with a lap to go. Inside : the final half mile John Jinks, Gunfire, i and Craganour ran to the front, and Avernus and Somerby lost their positions. John Jinks led into the straight, but Craganour came with a good finish, ' and won in fine style by three lengths i { r om Tactless, who heat John Jinks by a neck. Jolly Wave was fourth, and then came Gunfire, Meteor, and iodd L °lndianapolis was sent out an odds-on chance for the Sehvyn Handicap, and those who backed him for a place lost money. Ngingongmgo and Belinda dwelt af, “he start and Great Author broke un after going two furlongs. Indianapolis soon reached a handy position, and pnssiii" the stand Ngingongmgo was leading, with Haydns. Probationer, and Indianapolis running in close order. Indianapolis was in charge going down the hack, and led Sodium and Vesuvius to the home turn. Indianapolis stalled oft a challenge from Vesuvius, and beat him by two lengths. Ron was four lengths away third, with Probationer, Ngingongmgo, Belinda, and I Major Lind next. Indianapolis was always travelling like a winner once he settled down to work. T , ~ . I The card concluded with Roddy and Nelson’s Victory breaking up at the start for the International Handicap. Arethusa was 1 then in charge, but gave way to Brent Zolock who led to the turn. Nelson’s | Victory raced to the front, and Roddy i arrived with a dash of speed, but failed Ito reach the first-named. Free Advice 1 was travelling well at the finish, but nothing put up such a meritorious performance as the first two after losing ground at the start. Muriel de Oro and Arethusa followed the placed lot.
