THE MARRIAGE AGE

STATUTORY RAISING SOUGHT MINISTER EXPRESSES AGREEMENT. (Peh United Press Association.) ' AUCKLAND, July 1. Approval of the request that legislation should be introduced to raise the marriage age from 12 for girls and 14 for boys to 16 was expressed by the Minister of Justice (Mr J. G. Cobbe) to-day. The Dominion treasurer of the National Council of Women (Mrs M'Nair) said that even in India the law was far ahead of New Zealand, and Miss Melville said that it was no use talking about New Zealand being civilised while the preseut marriage law remained on the Statute Book.

The Minister said he entirely agreed , with the proposal. The only obstacle to * an amendment of the law was the pres-, sure brought to bear by parents in certain circumstances.

The same deputation made several other requests. The Minister agreed that a woman officer should be present at public inquests on females. He said that the appointment of women jurors presented many difficulties. There was a feeling that in certain cases witnesses would be reticent about giving full evidence if women were on the jury.
