MUSICAL ATTRACTION AT SAVOY
The artistic temperament of the Roland family was evinced at an early age when their father, a North Island business man, sent them to Vienna to study. After five years’ absence this brilliant musical family have returned to New Zealand, and after completing a season at the Regent Theatre they have been engaged to entertain patrons of the Savoy every afternoon this week. When in Vienna the six children studied at the Conservatorium of Music, and also Under'" the famous Professor Malcher (one time teacher of the former . Queen of Rumania and now leader of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra). There they came into contact with many of the celebrities of the musical world, all of whom showed the greatest interest in the talented family combination. The Roland family consists of five girls and a 13-year-old boy, who has remarkable gifts of leadership. From Vienna they - toured the Continent, and after studying at Budapest they furthered their musical education in London, where they were invited to play before Princess May of Cambridge. The Cherniavsky Trio took a marked interest in the children, and set in train plans for an Australian and New Zealand tour for them. Beautiful Viennese melodies are featured on the programme of the Roland Sextet, who excel, in the lovely works of Strauss and Schubert, Straues's son Johann 111 honoured the sextet by inviting them to play at the Strauss celebrations in Vienna a year ago. Dunedin has already had proof of the ability of the children, and everywhere they have captured their audiences by their skilful playing, the co-ordination and harmony of violins, ’cellos, and piano being delightful. At their appearance every afternoon at the Savoy they will play the . following-from their extensive repertoire:—“The Skaters” (Waldteufel), “Vienna Girls” (Ziehrer), “Blue Danube” (Strauss), “Gipsy Children (Gersehon), “Gipsy Baron” (Strauss), “Wieher March” (Lehar), and selections from “Lilac Time” (Schubert). The beautifully-decorated Savoy will be setting setting for this musical attraction. Chrysanthemums of gorgeous colours wili be the predominating flowers, but the profusion of other blooms and pot plants’ will also be remarkably colourful for this season.
