“IL TROVATORE”

Agnong the many popular numbers in “'ll Trovatore,” which will be staged in His Majesty’s Theatre from Wednesday of next week to Saturday by the Grand Opera Club, are the duets “ Home to Our Mountains,” “ The Miserere,” the_ bantone solo, u The Tempest of the Heai t, the three striking tenor numbers. Strike Down the Dread Pyre,” “ Ah, Yes, Thou Art Mine,” and the serenade, Lonely 1 Wander,” the famous “ Stride la Vampa, or “Fierce Flames are Raging,” for the contralto; the soprano, “ Breese of the Night” and- “’Twas Nigflit,., arid All Wound,” and the great soldiers’ chorus and the Anvil Chorus. In the gipsy scene and chorus a very striking ballet from the Rena Covering School of Daneing (Miss M. Tuckwell, principal) gives a traditional gipsy dance, the complete stage setting being picturesque ■ in the extreme. A very fine , chonis, all the members of which have fine voices, secures some splendid effects. The orchestra is the best procurable, and the principal characters certainly prove that New Zealand can produce grand opera singers of a high standard. visiting artists like Mr John Brownlee and others are continually impressing on Dunedin singers the value of operatic work to give character apd poise to their singing, and in the Grand Opera Club the benefit of this is becoming very appar-’ ent Miss Gaynor Paape, Miss Dorothy Mackay, Miss Mary 'Belcher, Miss Phyllis Clare, Miss Jess M'Millan, Mr Hubert Carter (of Christchurch), Mr Arthur Macdonald, Mr Alexander M'Dowell, Mr Ernest Paris, and Mr J. B. Watt are the principal characters, and Mr Alfred Wnlmsley is directing the opera, with Mr Jack Gordon and Mr Alexander M'Cartney as stage managers.
