PROVISION FOR THE WINTER GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S FUND (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 27. The following additional contributions and promises of gifts in kind in aid of the Governor-Geiieral’s Unemployment Relief Fund have been received at Government House, Auckland: —

BUILDING SUBSIDY SCHEME

THE WELLINGTON APPLICATIONS,

WELLINGTON, June 29.

While it is understood that the number of applications on approved lines under the building subsidy scheme do not release as large a sum, for labour as in sonie other centres, the applications for jobs in Wellington/ 91- to - date, show a total estimated cost of £52,562, involving an estimated’labour' cost of £14,132, the; subsidy' .upon’ which' varies according tothe nature of the work. It is stated from .the bureau that ‘ the 'job« will cost from} £15,000 odd down, to £B. There are two works over £IO,OOO, two of £4OOO, and orie of £2OOO. _ A number of' wbrks in progress, including the National Museum and Art. Gallery, are not included in the present scheme. : 1 ' '

A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Dunedin Queen Carnival was held yesterday morning, and was attended byMessrs J. J. Marlow (chairman). H. L. Paterson, W. Kindley, S. Pitt, H. Harris,; arid Major Mead, • . ' Mr R. H. Steele offered his services as minute secretary to the organiser, andthis offer was gratefully accepted. ' • The organising secretary (Mr G. A., Wycherley) reported on the progress' made. Nominations had been received, from the Kinema Queen Committee and, Services Queen Committee, both of which had already . begun organising. The re-' spective nominations were Mrs R. S. Black (colours royal blue and gold) and; Mrs Xorah Ross (colours red, white, and: blue). ' The chairman, stated that the Mayor s Relief Committee was desirous that -no direct appeal should be made to the citi-, zens on behalf of the Queen Carnival until the committee’s scheme had been com-, pleted —lt was resolved to request/ existing organisations not to make any such appeal until after July 13, when the carnival scheme will be definitely launched. The closing date was fixed at Saturday, August 26. _ In connection with the Mayors Relief; Committee activities, the meeting > considered that it should be made clear'that; the Queen Carnival effort was a distinct-: one, and that the proceeds from it would - not be included in-the £IO,OOO aimed at. - Mr Harris reported that a of - sports bodies was to be held with a view: to the nomination of a Sports queen. The chairman mentioned other possible nominations, and the matter of expediting these was left in the hands of a subcommittee. It was resolved to fix the value of each vote at one penny, and that books ; of voting coupons be issued to each Qneen Committee by the organising secretary; _ . . Representation on the General Commit-; tee was fixed at two members from each, Queen Committee and tl\e chairman of the executive. It was agreed to make application for the-use of the Town Hall and basement on occasions during the period covered by the carnival activities. Meetings of tramway employees were held in the afternoon at the Tram Sheds, and were addressed by the Mayor (the Rev, E. T. Cox), Crs Marlow and H. C. Campbell, and.'Mr G. A. Wycherley. Resolutions were passed unanimously pledging support of the movement to organise a civic queen.
