ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Football Association, was held last evening, the chairman (Mr J. Simpson) presiding. F.A. TROPHY. , The chairman extended the congratulations of the committee to the Otago team on its win oti Saturday. The team, he said, had certainly proved worthy holders of the Trophy. 'They were a team of triers, aud deserved the win. He also congratulated the junior team on its win against Southland, and said no doubt some of its players would be seen in higher football before long. The secretary submitted a balance sheet of the Otago-Canterbury match, the gate takings for which amounted to £162 16s 6d, leaving a profit of £76 14s 4d. The chairman remarked that, considering the present difficult times, it was a very satisfactory balance sheet, and great credit was due to the secretary (Mr A. W. Sinclair) for the manner in which he had carried out the onerous arrangements. Complimentary remarks were also made regarding the work of the committee, aiid also of Mr M'lnnes lor the broadcast of the match. REFEREES' DEPUTATION.
A deputation from the Otago Referees Club, consisting of Messrs W. P. Smith, A. Riach, and J. Morwood, waited on the committee in respect to referees' appointments. It was pointed out that the Alosgiel Club objected to playing under Mr A. Riach as a referee in the match with Maori Hill last Saturday week. On the casting vote of the chair, the meeting decided to take the matter iu open board. The chairman, in -welcoming the deputation, said he hoped it had come ill a helpful frame of mind, and the committee would be pleased to hear any ideas in regard to the appointment of referees. The committee recognised the good work the referees were doing for the game, and assured the deputation that the committee was at all times anxious to support them in their appointments. Mr W. P. Smith acted as spokesman, and said they had come to discuss the matter in a helpful way. He thought the association should support the Referees' Club by upholding the appointments. . Mr Riach, on being asked by the chairman whether he wished to speak, replied that he preferred not to, say anything, as he had expected that the matter would be taken in committee.
Mr M. G. M'lnnes remarked that it appeared to him that if he, as a referee, was placed in the position of refereeing a game in which a club was hostile to him, he would certainly not referee in that match under any circumstances. There were plenty of other games where his . services would be appreciated. Mr L. Scott concurred with the views of the previous speaker. Mr Smith, in replying, pointed out that the club had only four badgeholders, and it wa9 only fair that eacln should have a chance of refereeing in the big games. A referee was entitled to have a fair share.
Mr Riach stated that if a referee adopted the attitude suggested by Mr M'lnnes, he would be displaying signs of weakness. Mr M'lnnes, on the contrary, said he would be showing a sign of strength. Mr Smith further mentioned that this would be playing into the hands of the clubs. A refereenolding a badge was competent to referee any game, and his club contended that the association should uphold its appointments.: • Mr Ball said there 'were two sides to the matter. Referring to the MosgielMaori Hill match, he said the Referees' Club published Mr Riach's name for a match at Seacliff and then transferred him to the Mosgiel game on Saturday and it had been done in an underhand manner. As far as he was concerned no club was going to dictate to the association. Mr Smith then pointed out that the deputation had come there that night to ask the association to support its appointments and not to discuss any particular club. ■ The reason why the change was made in the particular match referred to was satisfactorily explained to the meeting, and the chairman assured the Referees Club that the association would not allow any club to dictate to it. but he thought that the appointments should be announced not later than Tuesday, and thus prevent placing the association in the position of having something unforeseen sprung on it' at the eleventh hour. Mr M'lnnes remarked that there, was no intention of the committee letting the referees down point _ blank. Under most circumstances it might , be all, right to support the Referees' Club, but in others occasions might arise, when it would not, be possible to do so, and the referees must understand the position. The association had the right of overriding their appointments if necessary, In reply to the chairman, who asked whether the Referees' Club intended appointing Mr Riach to referee a game in which. Mosgiel was concerned, Mr Smith replied in the affirmative, and stated that Mr Riach was a competent referee, and it was his turn to take a big game. The chairman asked.whether the committee would be prepared to bring forward a resolution that all clubs must accept the referees appointed. Several members stated that the deputation would understand from the tone of the meeting that they would have that assurance, ana no resolution was necessary. The clubs would have to realise the position. The members of the deputation, before retiring, expressed themselves as quite satisfied with the result of the discussion, and assured the committee that all appointments would in future be made on Monday evening. GENERAL. The transfer of Haldane from Port Chalmers *to Mosgiel was granted. In view of the Port Chalmers team's withdrawal from the second division, it was decided to delete all points for and against in its matches played.
