GIRL GUIDE NOTES

By Guides. . V TRAINING WEEK. The Easter training week, which was concluded with a tramp to Signal Hill on Saturday afternoon, was very successful. There were 34 in camp over the holidays, after which country Guiders had to leave, and a number of town ones came out for the evening sessions. The following companies and packs were represented over the Easter period:— Knox Rangers (2), 2nd Knox (2), Ist and 2nd Knox packs, Columba College (2), St. Andrew (2), and St. Andrew pack, Morhington (2), Highcliff (2), Musselburgh Guides and Brownies (4), Roslyn Brownies (2), Milton (2), Port Chalmers Guides and Brownies, Anderson’s Bay, South Dunedin, 2nd Caversham, 4th Dunedin, 2nd North-East Valley Brownies, Roxburgh, Dunback, Seacliff Brownies. Waikouaiti was represented for the days following Easter. It is for Guiders now to put into practice the new ideas and methods they have learned and to use them as the basis for fresh ideas of their own, developed according to the type of company or pack under their care. It is hoped that Guiders who were fortunate enough to attend the training will contribute to this column some of the new ideas and new games they learned, in camp for the benefit of those who were unable to come to the training. Miss Dutliie left on Wednesday for a few days in Pembroke and Queenstown, after which she will conduct a training week in Southland. An invitation .has come from that province for any Otago Guiders who are able to do so to attend that training from May 6 to 15. NEW REGISTRATION. It has been decided, in consultation with the companies concerned, to alter the registration numbers of groups within the Dunedin city boundary: so that each one may have a' Dunedin num-i her as well as its district title.- The companies will still in ordinary reference be known by their former names, but the use of a Dunedin number will make their place of origin clearer if members should be travelling. The only company to lose its number is Ist Dunedin, but as it once combined with 2nd Dunedin its new title is not as drastic a change as it would otherwise be. The official titles of the companies will now be as follows: —Ist Dunedin (Roslyn), 2nd Dunedin, 3rd Dunedin (Ist Knox), '4tb Dunedin, sth Dunedin (Musselburgh), 6th Dunedin (Columba College), 7th Dunedin (Mornington), Bth Dunedin (Anderson’s Bay), 9th Dunedin (NorthEast Valley), 10th Dunedin (South Dunedin),.llth Dunedin (2nd Knox), 12th Dunedin (St. Andrew), 13th Dunedin (Ist Caversham), 14th Dunedin (St. Hilda’s), 15th Dunedin (Central Mission), 16th Dunedin (2nd Caversham), 17th Dunedin (St. Clair). Captains wishing to order new name tapes are advised to make arrangements with Miss Helen Wilson. The Dunedin Division includes companies from Otakou as far as Seacliff. At the latter place it is proposed 'to start a Brownie pack, and a meeting of parents and friends interested has been arranged for next Friday afternoon. SWIMMING SPORTS. The Dunedin divisional swimming sports held last Friday evening were a great success. Much credit is due to Miss Hervey and the Guiders who assisted her for the 1 manner in which the sports were conducted. We offer our congratulations to Ist Dunedin on its good win, especially considering the size of the company.’ After the sports the Guiders entertained Miss Dutliie at supper. HOME NURSING. Guiders and Guides are reminded of the class arranged by Sister Kirkpatrick for 4 p.m. on Thursday afternoons. This is an opportunity that should not be missed. There are few things for which it is more important that a Guide should “bo prepared ” than for attending to cases of sickness in the home. BADGE SECRETARY. Miss Brasch has resigned from the position of Badge Secretary, and Miss A. Stevenson has undertaken the work. We would thank Miss Brasch for her past services, as the position is no light one. BADGE TESTS. Writer. —A written examination will be held to-morrow at 7 p.m. in Guide Room. Candidates must bring pen and ink.

Sportswoman. —A test will bo given at VVoodhaugh Gardens on Saturday at 2 o’clock at George street entrance to Woodhaugh Gardens. Bring written testimony of ability to play two required games.

Home Maker. —This test has been postponed till after school holidays. Domestic Service.—Tests will be arranged by company captains. Fire Brigade.—Mr Price, of the Central Fire Station, has offered to give instruction for the gaining of this badgj. Those Guides wishing to form a class for practical work are asked to give names to their captains.

Life Saving and Swimming, —Mr Mathicson urges Guides to make themselves proficient before attempting , the tests and has put his services at the disposal of Guides on Monday evenings at 6 p.m., when groups of Guides could practise the tests under his supervision. Guides must come to examinations in

uniform. Guides unable to attend arranged tests must send written apology for absence within three days. It should be noted that a’ letter of apology mqst give the reason for failure to attend. BADGE RESULTS. ' Athletes.—D. Neumann, I. Steele (South Dunedin), K. M'Combie, J. M'Kellar, J, Thompson (Ist Musselburgh), G. Ogg (Ist North-East Valley), H. Dodd, I; Blandford, M.: Russel, E. Mac Swain (Ist Caversham). SWIMMING THE CHANNEL. It seems to be so fashionable to try to swim the channel these days that I think it is about time the Guides had a shot at it. Here is a game to see which patrol can swim the Channel first. Each patrol must choose :-r A Chanhel swimmer. A trainer. A pilot. The other members of the patrol act as “ tides ” and “ sharks.” Prepare a channel for each patrol along the length of the room, with a chalk circle at one end for Prance (the starting point) and a chalk circle the other end for England. . When the whistle blows the trainer “ prepares ” the channel swimmer by removing her hat, bolt and tie, and blindfolding her.’ The pilot then takes over, and may shout directions to the swimmer all the way along, but must on no account touch , her. . The first obstacle to be overcome is the rocks (a line of chairs across the course, which must be climbed over). The next trouble is the “ tides.” (The swimmer must get past the Guides who are acting as “ tides ” without touching them. The “ tides ” must make a loud, “ swishy ” noise like waves all the time, but they must not move.) Once past the “ tides ” the bandage may be removed from the eyes, but the minute it is removed the “sharks” (starting from France) may chase after the swimmers and try to catch them before they reach England. - When the channel has been swum from Prance, to England, we suggest that the company tries to create a new record by trying to swim it from England to France, which has never been done yet. The swimmers and pilots and “tides,” etc., should all change parts, so as to give everyone a chance.
