ROXBURGH NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) . ROXBURGH, April 26. There was a cold wintry snap here on Sunday and Monday, and though the rainfall was not great there was a good coating of snow on the surrounding hills. The barometer, which , dropped to 29.4 in is now high again, and indications are for settled weather. The rainfall for April to date is 231 points. " APPLE EXPORT. Fruitgrowers are still very busy packing for the Home markets,. and up to last week 72,000 cases had been railed from the Roxburgh and Miller’s Flat They are now picking the later varieties, and will have considerable quantities for each of the next three boats. The season has been very prolific, and many growers had more fruit than they anticipated. LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS. Nominations for the position of mayor and eight councillors for the borough and two members to represent the Teviot Power Board closed on Friday. Mr F. A. Laloli was re-elected mayor for the third time without opposition, and Dr Gilrnour and Mr J. H. Waigth, jun., were elected unopposed to represent the borough on the Power Board. Nine nominations for councillors were received, and an election will be necessary. The .following have been nomi-nated:—-Messr's E. F. Allen, A. E. Alexander, H. Henderson, J. C. Gilchrist, G. Jeffery, J. M‘Vey, T. Waigth, W. H. Weaver, and A. E. Wilson. Six of these are members of the present council. ■ GOLF. A Medal Match was held on SaturSaturday for women and men, .a large number competing. The weather conditions were good, and, the course was in excellent order. Elder, 102—16—80; Mrs Gilrnour, 102—1086; Mrs Laloli, . 105—10—89; Miss Beresford, 110 —27 —89. PUBLIC BATHS. ? At the recent meeting of the Baths Committee- the secretary - (Mr. E. F. Allen) submitted a balance sheet of receipts and expenditure in connection with the construction of the baths. The total receipts from all sources amounted to £450, and the expenditure to £420, leaving, a balance of £24. In connection with the labouring work the local branch of the R.S.A. spent £24, in providing work ,for unemployed members and the committee decided to refund £5. The erection of a suitable fence and a men’s dressing shed are works that still remain to be done, and estimates for the latter are now being procured. It was decided to erect an open fence; hud this and the general finishing off of the surroundings will be undertaken before next season.

A deputation from the Swimming Club waited on the committee and suggested several, improvements, consideration of which were referred to the Control Committee. It was decided to send a letter of appreciation to the boys of the High School for the work they had given gratuitously on' the cleaning up of the grounds.' Reference was also made to the services given by Mr A.. Alexander, who had rendered much assistance in, the preparation of plans and specifications of the baths and buildings. , : ■ t April 27. Though the weather cleared on Monday and the glass rose to 30.00 it immediately began to fall and early on Wednesday morning rough squalls set in, 25 points of rain falling. The, afternoon cleared, hut rain again fell in the evening, continuing with very heavy showers till next morning, when 107 points had fallen. The glass this morning reads 29.80 and rising. The rain to date is 363 points, which is the highest since December, 1931. '■ :>, .
