(From Our Own Correspondent.) TE AROHA, October 10.

The recommendations of the Economy Commission that either the Thames or the Waihi School of Mines should be closed has caused deep concern at Te Aroha, and at a meeting representative of the Te Aroha Prospecting Association, the Chamber of Commerce and the Borough Council, which was attended by Mr A. H. Kimball, Under-secretary of Mines, a resolution was passed urging the Mines Department to retain both schools as it is most important at the present time that no restrictions be placed on the facilities they offer. NAPIER, October 10.

A fine of £75 was inflicted on Luke Brough in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge of using his premises as a common gaming house. Edward Jasper, charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker was fined £SO.

At a representative meeting of all shearers of Hawke’s Bay, it was unanimously decided “ that in view of the fact that wool values are rising, and on account of a greatly improved outlook for primary produce, we pledge ourselves to stand firm for the 1931 rates of pay — namely, shearers 21s per 100, pressers £2 15b per week, shed hands £2 10s, cooks (12 . men or under) £3 ss, assistant cooks £2 10s.” GREYMOUTH, October 10.

Basil Hodgson, aged 25, was charged with tlio theft of articles from the house of Margaret A. Stopforth, at Hokitika, including the winning ticket of the recent art union, and also with a breach of his probation. He pleaded guilty, and was remanded for a month in custody. Efforts will bo made in the meantime to try to get him in tho navy. Sittings of the Conciliation Council have resulted in complete agreements in the disputes of the shop assistants, and the plumbers and gasfitters. The dispute of the amalgamated engineers was deferred pending developments elsewhere.
