ENGINEERING DISPUTE

THE CONTENTIOUS CLAUSE ENGAGENMENT OF FEMALE LABOUR. (Pee United Pbess Association.) WELLINGTON, October 10. A statement made on behalf of the Amalgamated Engineers and Allied Trades Union by the secretaries of three sections involved in the Wellington strike says, inter alia:— . "Discontent is widespread throughout New Zealand against the unwarranted attack on the standard of living by the Employers’ Federation. The proposals of the employers printed in the guise of awards are repugnant not only to the workers, but also to a large proportion of the employers, Dirt money and meal money have been reduced, but the most callous proposal is the new clause dealing with female labour which is introduced for the first time into our awards. The work in the engineering industry is most unsuitable for women, being in many cases of a dirty nature. The environment of a foundry is detrimental to both the physical and moral condition of women.”
