NATIONAL ECONOMY
COMMISSION’S RECOMMENDATIONS
ENDORSED BY ASSOCIATED CHAMBERS (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, October 10. Unanimous approval was accorded the report of the National Expenditure Commission at a meeting to-day of the executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce. It,was decided to write to the Prime Minister (Mr G. W. Forbes) urging him to embody the recommendations in the legislation for the current session. “ Tlie report reveals how seriously the State expenditure is out of adjustment with the fallen national income, and it points out clearly the directions in which that expenditure must he scaled down to the reduced resources of the country,” says a statement by the executive, “ Not only the itemised departmental and other economies proposed, but also the complete changes in State policy recommended in connection with the Public Works Department, the hospital and other systems, are essential to economic reconstruction and should be put into effect without delay. The only alternative to economy is increased taxation. Trade, industry, and commerce cannot carry any further taxes, and, as a matter of national urgency, should be relieved of the existing taxation at the earliest possible opportunity in order to facilitate a national recovery.”
