OTAGO WINTER SHOW
DAIRY PRODUCE ENTRIES OTAGO SUCCESSES AT INVERCARGILL. Southland, Otago, and Canterbury dairy factory companies are represented in the excellent list of entries in the butter and cheese sections of the catalogue for the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society s winter show, which opens on Tuesday week. In the cheese section 150 entries have been received, and there are 43 entries in the butter section. Several of the Otago factories represented by entries in next week’s show were among the prizewinners at the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s Winter Snow last week, and if similar quality to that which was in evidence at Invercargill is forthcoming for the Dunedin show the display this year should be as good aS any in the past. The judges at the Southland show remarked that the standard of quality in the cheese section was this year higher than for some years, noth body and texture being outstandingly good. All the butter was of good, sound quality and the general standard was unusually high. OTAGO PRIZEWINNERS. The most prominent of the Otago prizewinners at Invercargill was the Waikouaiti Dairy Company, winner of the Kilkelly Cup and many class awards. The Southland championship was won by the Oware Dairy Company,_ with Waikaka second, and Fairfax third. Oware was also runner-up in the Kilkelly Cup competition. The Waikouaiti Dairy Company secured first prize and ninth prize in a field of 24 in the class for large white export cheese, second out of 21 in the class for large coloured export cheeses, and third in the class for white cheeses open only to factories whose output does not exceed 75 tons. In this class the Milton Dairy Company filled fourth place, while Waiwera, Kaitangata, and Maungatua occupied places well down the list. The Waikouaiti Company was also first in the mediumcoloured cheeses class, and the Maungatua Company secured fourth place in the selected export cheese class. The list of Otago factories competing at Invercargill was as follows:—Wajkouaiti, 11 entries; Maungatua, 7; Kaitangata, 3; Milton, 5, Waiwera, 2; Owaka, 1; Otago Co-operative Dairy Company, 1. Very poor entries were received in the butter section, for which there were three classes. TJie Owaka Dairy Company secured first prize for export butter with 95 points, the Otago Co-operative Dairy Company second with 94§ points. There were only two other entries in the class, and only three entries altogether in the other two butter classes, no Otago companies competing in either of them.
