UNIVERSITY REGISTRAR HONOURED

TWENTY-ONE YEARS’ SERVICE PRESENTATION BY UNIVERSITY COUNCIL. Recognition of his 21 years’ service in the office of registrar of the University of Otago was accorded Mr H. Chapman yesterday afternoon by the University Council. Tributes were paid to his outstanding qualities as a registrar and to his dqJ*)tion to the University. The vice-chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell), on behalf of members of the council, presented Mr Chapman with a handsome engraved toilet case as a token of their goodwill and esteem. Mr Morrell, in handing over the gift, said that Mr Chapman had recently completed his twenty-first year in the position of registrar, and members felt that the occasion could not be allowed to pass unnoticed. They had all had a sufficiently lengthy association with Mr Chapman to appreciate the excellent qualities which had always been reflected in his work. He had throughout his term of office displayed great energy, tact, and thorough devotion, not only to his office, but also to the University. Members of the council regarded him not alone as an able and valued officer, but also as an esteeemed friend. He had great pleasure, therefore, in handing him a toilet case as a token of the goodwill and esteem of members of the council.— (Applause.) Sir James Allen, speaking aa an exchancellor of the University, said he would like to endorse everything that the vice-chancellor had said. He had been associated with Mr Chapman for very many years, and was pleased to have an opportunity of paying a tribute to his work. The speaker expressed the hope that Mr Chapman would have a happy, successful, an instructive trip on the tour abroad he was contemplating, and that he would return to Dunedin more convinced than ever of the benefits to be derived by students at the Otago University.— (Applause.) Mr L. Deans Ritchie (honorary treasurer) also spoke. He said that whatever disputations, arguments and disagreements, members had on questions of .policy and administration, they were in complete agreement and harmony on the subject of Mr Chapman. His work spoke for itself, and the speaker declared that for the 10 years he had been associated with the council he could say that the registrar had never wavered in his Idyalty and devotion to the University, the welfare of which he had so closely at heart. —(Applause.) Mr Chapman briefly replied, thanking the council for the confidence expressed in him and also for the (gift he had just received. During bis term of office he had been singularly fortunate in the assistance he had received, and he felt that in this respect it was only just that he should refer to the excellent services of the office staff.
