AUSTRALIA’S FUTURE

MISTAKES OF THE PAST ARCHBISHOP’S REMEDIES. LONDON, May 4. “The Australian situation is critical, but not desperate,” Archbishop Kelly told a representative of the Sun on his arrival at Liverpool, whence he will go to Dublin. “ The solution lies with the people, who must eliminate antagonism of every kind and form one social body,” says the archbishop. “There are no class distinctions in Australia. We are all ladies and gentlemen,” he continued. “ Trades unions must bo conducted on right principles, and need men of character and ability to give wise leadership. . ... “ The extravagant and luxurious living of the past was neither wise nor necessary and makes the present straitened conditions seem strange. “Australia needs new industries to deal with primary products and give employment ensuring the employer profit, as if there were no profit there would not be any wages. The younger fellows are irresponsible, openly advocating socialism and materialism. They are opposed to work, forgetting that people must work to be happy.” The authorities must cease to borrow to pay interest, and should borrow for only productive purposes. Archbishop Kelly added that he believed that prosperity would return. He hoped the people would not be misled by the unions. “Wo must have unions, but they must work for the common good,” he declared.
